Re: Hdew em-1 £999

It has gone up £20 since yesterday!
If you Google Olympus items eglobal appears in the results, but you are correct, the website doesn't show a way to navigate to Olympus stock?

HDEW are grey importers but they are a UK company and hold stock in the UK and if you are VAT registered you get to claim the VAT back.

Re: Hdew em-1 £999

Attended the Cameraworld show in London on Saturday and sat in on a talk from sports photographer Mike Inkley, an Olympus user and brilliant professional photographer. The final part of his presentation was specifically about the potential disasters that can occur when buying from grey importers and one of the examples he used was HDEW. On that basis I would go nowhere near them.

Re: Hdew em-1 £999

I've used HDEW on a few occasions and have always had excellent service.
YMMV of course.

I'd be interested to know of the potential disaster examples he gave.

I have used HDEW before as have friends. Never had problems. I often recommend them to colleagues based on their half way house standing (grey stock but shop based and still offering good warranties).

Re: Hdew em-1 £999

Essentially he was warning about issues if your gear went wrong and in particular the Olympus stance on warrenty claims with grey importers. There was much else and to be fair other companies were quoted. It was at the end of his presentation and since I do not by from grey importers or from overseas, I did not make notes.

Re: Hdew em-1 £999

I think it is worth bearing in mind that Mike Inkley is an Olympus Ambassador, not just an Olympus user, so I would expect him to toe the party line. I have bought only one grey import, an MC-14 teleconverter from HDEW, and I purchased it in the knowledge that it might not be covered by the Olympus UK warranty. HDEW provide their own 12 months warranty and some customer reviews I have read suggest that it does work well. The purchasing experience was excellent. I would think carefully before buying an expensive, complicated camera from a grey importer but I was willing to take a chance on a teleconverter in the hope that there is not a lot to go wrong and that it is a comparatively inexpensive item.

Re: Hdew em-1 £999

I merely pass on what he said. I was aware of his status having sat in on his presentation at the Photography show. He did actually praise other camera makes too. Apparently he switched to Olympus after a very serious road accident which led to him struggling to lift professional Canon/Nikon gear and in particular the large telephoto lenes he would use in sports photography.

Re: Hdew em-1 £999

I bought my 300/4 from HDEW. After a while it developed a fault which was promptly repaired by Johnsons of Glasgow. i would be happy to buy from HDEW again.

Re: Hdew em-1 £999

Slightly different point of view is the second hand market value roughly the same price as HDEW re the MK2? If so any form of warranty offered by HDEW surely would be better than no warranty assuming Olympus don't honour their warranty with any transfer of ownership.
The positive feedback on here for HDEW purchases is a massive bonus.
