Re: Oly 300 f4 spoiler?

It might be if the quality is there at 400mm & the price is attractive.

Re: Oly 300 f4 spoiler?

Yea, but at 300mm, the 100-400 will be f5.6 or thereabouts.

To slow and already diffraction limited at the long end.

Doesn't sound as interesting as the 300 f/4 to me but each one to their own

It might mean the 300 f4 is very close.

Mmm! A poser. Hopefully real world tests, when they eventually reach us, will suggest which is best.

This is the link to more info and image of the actual lens:http://donsphoto.com/blog/2015/07/an...uiv-zoom-lens/
I have used the Leica DG lenses and have found them to be both sharp and with a very pleasing OOF transition. I am interested!

Re: Oly 300 f4 spoiler?

I am sure the Panasonic Leica lens will be excellent but a) it's a zoom (so the optical design is more of a compromise) and b) as previously mentioned, it will be slower (less bright) at 300mm. It will probably be larger and heavier, too. There is plenty of room for both of these lenses in the Micro Four Thirds armoury

Re: Oly 300 f4 spoiler?

Thank you Ian. Yes a zoom is very often a compromise, although I have used very high quality (and expensive!) Leica R zooms with a small zoom range that have been described as the equal of each of the equivalent focal length Leica prime lenses that were also available at the time.

The big advantage that a zoom lens provides over a prime lens when photographing wildlife, is the speed which one can re-zoom and focus when the darned critter suddenly decides to position itself much closer!

As always, it's horses for courses!

Re: Oly 300 f4 spoiler?

Obviously the panaleica is vapour wear as it is just an intention to develop it, the point was the timing of the announcement! It seems more like a Nikon / Canon trick?

Re: Oly 300 f4 spoiler?

DP Review stae that the Panasonic is an f4-f6.3. The olly lens is an f4 prime and takes the 1.4 converter so they are essentially aimed at different markets.

Re: Oly 300 f4 spoiler?

The fact that the Oly will take the 1.4 converter would lean me towards it, as well as the fact that it's brighter overall. Plus it has at least got a theoretical release date.

Question Re: Oly 300 f4 spoiler?

I doubt if it's vapour wear! But time will tell. Olympus are always difficult to read on their actual delivery of a new lens as they announce it some time in advance and can be a year or more. I was advised back in April by a knowledgeable Olympus manager that the F4/300 will be available in the UK not before the back end of the year. Perhaps just in time for Chistmas? I have my name down for one so I shall be waiting for the call! That is unless the Panny 200-400 is announced first
