Exclamation Quick reminder: The Lounge is for non-photography topics!

Can I just gently remind everyone that we have dedicated boards for most camera, lens and other photography topics. Please think what your subject is primarily about and start your thread in the appropriate board.

Thanks!

Ian

Re: Quick reminder: The Lounge is for non-photography topics!

I suspect members post photographic questions in the Lounge because rightly or wrongly they feel there is a better chance of their question being read and replied to.

Newcomers in particular are more likely to post here because they have yet to explore the darker corners of the forum.

The Nostalgia Nexus is one of the more interesting corners of the forum (for me at least), but is rarely visited by most of us.

I think you are very right! I have my default setting 'where it is' (which happens to be the Lounge), and must admit, not delved further - to be honest, not realising my default was the Lounge, I thought all Posts were initially shown in this Thread. I know better now, but I am an example of how true you Post is.

Re: Quick reminder: The Lounge is for non-photography topics!

Like just about every web site I have ever seen this site has a Home Page. http://e-group.uk.net/ On this page you will see posts from every forum board which is currently active and every new thread that is started will also show on this page as well as that for the specific board it is posted on. If you bookmark this page every time you visit you will see everything which is going on. Additionally every single page has a bar at the top with links to the Home page, forum index, gallery and even new posts and unanswered posts etc. etc.

It isn't rocket science.

Interesting Peter I rarely go to the Home page myself. I always start with the New Posts Tab. Mind you that's been a bit flaky for me recently and now I have to make sure I hit it to show 1 or 2 days posts, the "Get all new posts" drop down misses some out for some reason.

Re: Quick reminder: The Lounge is for non-photography topics!

Thanks to Peter for his helpful reply, but I now see from Phill's response, below, that actually I am not in never-never land, as like Phill, I always start with the New Posts Tab and select x Days to look at..

Having said that there does seem to be stuff in the other Thread Tabs that I have not seen in 'New Posts'.

But perhaps Peter could put us right on that.

Re: Quick reminder: The Lounge is for non-photography topics!

Yes, it's generally possible to find a sub-forum that suits the sort of things I want to post, but sometimes it is a bit of a squeeze, and I can entirely understand why newbies in particular might just plump for the 'Lounge'. Old hands here have learned some custom and practice, but if we don't make it clear, then it's our fault not theirs.

For example, 'Events' says it's for E-system related events, so (strictly) where would you put, say, an alert about the Sony Photo Awards show or a lecture by Martin Parr? 'Tutorials, informative and classic threads' has a big flavour of education in the subheading (and doesn't seem to be used much/at all for this sort of thing, although it could be I suppose: it isn't obvious, anyway).

Similarly, where should an alert go about a new photo book by a good photographer? Older and classic stuff can go in the 'Nostalgia Nexus', but what about a new handbook on street photography that has just been published?

Re: Quick reminder: The Lounge is for non-photography topics!

I would agree with Dr Mark above.

From a newbie's perspective, if they need a quick answer to a photographic question they are unlikely to post in a dark corner of the forum that appears to have been abandoned for the past year or so.

I have posted questions in appropriate sections of other (non-photographic) forums when I needed an answer to a question, and have yet to receive any reply, so this concern is entirely justified and understandable.

It might help if members could receive a notification when a new thread has been added to less popular areas, (such as Nostalgia Nexus) as at present we only see new threads if we make a point of visiting that particular forum.

I wouldn't want to be notified of all new threads throughout the forum, but it would be good if we could select which departments we want to ne notified about new threads from, if that makes sense.

Re: Quick reminder: The Lounge is for non-photography topics!

I wonder whether a "General photography" subforum might help, with the subheading something like "Current photography topics that don't fit elsewhere: these might include alerts about books, events and other resources that are not specifically Olympus E-system focused"?

This might have been suggested before and rejected for some good reason, but I'm not aware of that and I thought it worth raising.

Re: Quick reminder: The Lounge is for non-photography topics!

Interesting comments and I think we can improve things in light of these.

I can create a photography-specific catch-all board, though I still want specific discussions to live in the most appropriate board and so expect some threads to be moved accordingly.

The Lounge, however, is and always has been a non-photography board. It hasn't been moderated very strenuously, which is why photo-related threads there do seem to have increased over time, and I can only hold my hand up to that

I am surprised some regard posts in the specialist boards lacking in some spotlight as they will be highlighted for a time on the Home page, as well as on Recent Posts.

Some report that Recent Posts doesn't always work for them - this is almost certainly a cookie issue. It may be worth deleting all e-group.uk.net cookies from your browser and re-logging in.

That sounds good to me Ian. As for the cookie issue you may be right but I'm not convinced as I've deleted mine a couple if times now as you suggested but it didn't fix it. I've learn't to live with it now by going for the recent posts in the last day or two drop down as it works OK then. The little glitches are not worth worrying about to be honest now ahead of the forum update.

This is a good idea in principle, but it has the drawback of creating yet another sub-forum in an already cluttered forum!

Indeed, I believe it could be argued that the sheer number of sub-forums making up this forum actually weakens its appeal because technical discussions have become so specific and 'compartmentalised'. It is this, I would aver, that sometimes makes it difficult to gain attention when creating new threads in the darker corners of the forum; and hence the tendency to post photography related matters in the Lounge.

If anything, I would like to see a rationalisation of sub-forums so that all are visited more often than at present.
