The Streets of Sydney

Have you seen the old man in the closed down market
Picking up the papers with his worn out shoes
In his eyes you see no pride and hanging loosely at his side
Yesterdays paper, telling yesterdays news
So how can you tell me you're lonely
And say for you that the sun don't shine
Let me take you by the hand and lead you through the streets of Sydney
I'll show you something to make you change your mind

(Ralph McTell - slightly misquoted)

Interestingly, they all look relatively well fed and quite 'tidy'.

Re: The Streets of Sydney

Thanks Phill, this thread was based upon Ralph McTell's poignant ballad, "The Streets of London" in which I saw a parallel in the streets of Sydney.

I used the escalator as a metaphor representing the descent into destitution. The despair of the homeless reminded me of how much one can be thankful for. The Photoshopped 'lens-blurred' Central Station is a kind of misty-eyed departure point from what I had just observed.

Jim, I was replying to Phill as yours came in.

Yes indeed, they do look quite well fed as you say. And to be truthful I viewed these few characters with some scepticism as to whether they were as bereft as they appeared, or whether they were prosperous beggars. I watched a group of four or five young people engaging with the guy in the first image who, if you look closely, can be seen sheepishly stuffing their ten dollar donation into his pocket.

Re: The Streets of Sydney

Unfortunately, the really down and out are being upstaged by the 'beggars' who sit in cities/towns looking destitute yet (and I've actually seen this) they have i-phones in leather cases. Liverpool city has recognized this problem and are trying to solve it, I hope they do, so that the really needy get the aid and help and the 'professional' beggar, some with their well fed dogs, etc are moved on.

Edit to say, typing as Pandora's reply came in.

Re: The Streets of Sydney

Thanks Keith, I noticed that these guys mysteriously disappear after the 5'oclock rush hour as workers return home. So it poses the question, where do they kip?

Mark, some time ago our local newspaper exposed a guy who had been begging in the town centre for years. Apparently he would arrive early morning, park his BMW in the multi story car park and sit all day begging. It turns out he also lived in a bungalow in a rural area a few miles away. After the article was published, he vanished.

John

Re: The Streets of Sydney

John, he must have been a pretty brazen character to have pulled that stunt for so long.
And although what some of these guys do is nasty and unconscionable, I guess there's no law aginst them doing it.

Re: The Streets of Sydney

I have to say similar dubious thoughts went through my mind, especially about the last shot. The shoes look to be hardly worn and I'm sure tattoos aren't cheap. Then there is the Conference bag...? maybe I'm wrong and apologies to the gent if I am but it all looks a bit contrived.
