Ooh... it gets good reviews....tempting.... but what’s the pre-selection of distance range thing all about?

Instead of infinity to closest focus you can limit the focusing range in order to avoid large focus movements well out of the desired range. There is a dial on the side of the lens with focus range limit options:

1:1 Closest focus

0.19-0.4 metres

0.19 metres to infinity

Re: Amazon deal for the m.Zuiko 60mm macro?

Ian has explained the function of the dial well. However with reference to 1:1: the dial is rotated all the way anti-clockwise which sets it to genuine 1:1 macro. However as soon as the dial is released it springs back to a mid position but the focus remains set to 1:1 until the shutter release button is pressed (if the camera is set to autofocus.) To focus at 1:1 it is best to turn the dial fully anti-clockwise and then physically move the camera to and fro until the subject is sharp before releasing the shutter. I am sure that is clear as mud.

Re: Amazon deal for the m.Zuiko 60mm macro?

No you don't need to hold the dial as the lens will stay at 1:1 until you touch the shutter release button (assuming you are using autofocus.) If you are using manual focus it won't lose 1:1 until you manually focus. I wish I hadn't started this now.

Re: Amazon deal for the m.Zuiko 60mm macro?

The lens also serves as a good quality portrait lens! Plus, it's dust and splash-proof and it uses internal focusing so its size never changes
