e 400 upgrade?

I am a real amateur and quite lazy so don't use manual focusing. I mainly use the e 400 for wildlife photography but was thinking about an upgrade - but what to and are the lenses interchangeable? I mainly use the big 600mm equivalent telephoto lens and have some great dragonfly and butterfly photos using this big lens at one to 2 metres distance. Not Macro quality but at least the subject isn't disturbed at this distance. Hints and tips as a newbie gratefully received.

Re: e 400 upgrade?

Regular 4/3 lenses, as fittable to your E-400, are at bargain prices now. If you want similar reach but better quality I would look at the 50-200 plus 1.4X teleconverter.

Re: e 400 upgrade?

Andy, which equivalent 600mm lens are you referring to? There are a number of body options but it depends on your budget as well.

Re: e 400 upgrade?

It is an Olympus 70 - 300mm lens and presume that gives me 600mm equivalent on this lens system?

That's right. It is one of the Live View optimised lenses (for later DSLR bodies using Contrast Detect AF), especially if it has been updated to the latest firmware & can be used on all of the latest M4/3's bodies with an adapter (MMF2 or 3). The OM-D models would be a good upgrade path & the E-M5 (3 years old now), E-M10 & E-M5 II (just released) all use CD-AF whereas the E-M1 uses PD-AF (as a DSLR) for that lens. I used that lens quite successfully on the E-M5, but as you know it isn't the fastest lens to focus. If you did go down the path of the OM-D you might want some kind of grip as well but if you didn't use one the E400 then it may not bother you on the OM-D models (the E-M1 has a grip more like the E500 models). If you could get into a camera shop & handle one then you would see what I mean.

I hope that helps.
