Re: Communal Night-Sky Photography Thread

Many thanks Mike.

The photo is taken with a 102mm f/7 APO triplet refractor using prime focus method. 700mm focal length is way too short for this subject. The frames are in focus however lacking detail. And should have gone for longer Shutter time and lower ISO.

Best Regards
Tord

Re: Communal Night-Sky Photography Thread

Very nice, the detail on the left is superb !

The nearer it is to a full moon, the brighter side of the moon gets more washed out and over exposed.

Try underexposing the image by a full stop or even more. Manual mode is best to allow you to underexpose and get more detail from the bright right side.

Re: Communal Night-Sky Photography Thread

Dave there seems to be a lot of detail in that shot but it does look a bit unnatural somehow. What did you do to process it?

Well spotted! I agree its overdone.

With the recent discussions on here about high ISO I thought I would try a moonshot at iso1600. This is 10 shots handheld at iso1600 preprocessed in PIPP and then stacked in Autostakkert. I then used Astra Image Processing app to do deconvolution. But I totally overdid the deconvolution to try and get the detail out and then added even more sharpening.

It is fairly clear that the dynamic range suffers the higher the iso, and you end up forcing detail unnaturally.

Kept me out of mischief for a while!

Re: Communal Night-Sky Photography Thread

Just had another go tonight. Handheld again but this time iso3200, 1/4000th sec, f/5.6. used my 300mm + MC-14. Stacked best 20 out of 60 shots. Eased off somewhat on the deconvolution this time. Its a bit better than last nights but I had hoped for better.

Re: Communal Night-Sky Photography Thread

Are the photos over denoised? (is there such a word)

The moon is so bright, I see no reason to go overboard on ISO. But it was worth a try, but as Phill has noted they do look a bit "painted"...…….

I must have another go myself...……...

Re: Communal Night-Sky Photography Thread

Just seeing what impact iso had. I normally use base iso 200
Keeps me occupied in the dark nights. I will stick to that going forward.

Re: Communal Night-Sky Photography Thread

I tried taking a Moon photo while the sky was still a fairly bright and clear blue, at 16:46 this afternoon.

It's a single shot, with the raw image processed in DxO Optics Pro 11,using some increase in local contrast.

Shot using E-M1-ii with Leica 100-400mm (at max zoom), 1/400s@f/8, ISO 1250
