Re: Auf Wiedersehen

Preparing for the inevitable I wrote my own epitaph.
I see nothing ghoulish about that as I've no fear of dying.
When a camera dies then it's time to replace it, isn't that so?
The "Big Eight O" is looming with many more pictures to make.
But one never knows how, why, where or when the lights will go out.
What unfolds next remains unrevealed between the quick and the dead.

Mark Greenhill

No worries Ed. I've no significant health issues presently and I've largely adjusted to Janette's departure, although I will miss her until hopefully we catch up again someplace, perhaps.

Thanks for commenting Ed.

Re: Auf Wiedersehen

A lovely tribute to Janette Mark.

Looking at your own epitaph, I realised that you are only eleven days older than my father.

I hope to be seeing your photographs for many years to come.

Re: Auf Wiedersehen

A beautiful and heart-felt tribute to Janette. As for your own epitaph, there is no harm in being prepared, so long as you also plan for the future and not just the end!

Like you, I have no fear of dying; it's how my days might end, rather than when, that concerns me. I think it is easier to accept the inevitable if you can satisfy yourself that you lived life to the full and embraced every opportunity. There was one period in my life when I could say that was at least partly true and I cling to the comfort of that. However, I must also acknowledge that I passed on the opportunity to take a more adventurous route, opting instead to get married and follow a safe career path for security in retirement. Now, my retirement plans have been derailed through unforseen circumstances beyond my control and I do sometimes wonder what might have been had I followed my heart instead of my head many years ago. To anyone reading this I would say by all means plan your life sensibly, but do not become too obsessed with next year's crop when this year's has still to be harvested.

Thanks Dave - I do expect to continue the journey for a little while yet, so long as 'me hoss don't go lame an' the creek don't rise!'

Many thanks for your thoughts on this topic, John. I know from experience how these matters can cause dissention between individual family members, each with their own perfectly valid but disparate ideas as to what should be inscribed on the headstone. I'm avoiding that situation by writing my own epitaph into my will - it's the "Be Prepared" boy scout in me that is at work here!

Your life's game plan in choosing a "safe" path instead of an adventurous one was opposite to mine - I sometimes wish I had followed a more conventional path and embraced all the opportunities that were available to me, although in hindsight it's been a wonderful life and I'm at peace with myself. Dying is a part of the life cycle, not to be feared as such, I think, and it's a great opportunity to acknowledge responsibility for the mistakes we made. At the end of the day we can only hope for a peaceful departure.

Ha Amanda! My XZ-2 has already fallen off its perch, but I'm looking forward to the birth of a 'son to XZ-2' to arrive on my birthday!

Re: Auf Wiedersehen

So sorry Mark,
due to my own particular circumstances I was unaware of your great loss until this post, I am so sorry that a light has been taken from the world, but Janette has left a shining legacy for the years to come.
That is a wonderful tribute to a life partner, she must be smiling!
