Email Virus the worse seen so far becareful!!

I have just received this warning at work and thought it would be good to pass this information to as many people as possible.

PLEASE FORWARD THIS WARNING AMONG FRIENDS, FAMILY AND CONTACTS!

You should be alert during the next few days. Do not open any message with an attachment entitled "POSTCARD," regardless of who sent it to you. It is a virus which opens A POSTCARD IMAGE, which 'burns' the whole hard disc C of your computer. This virus will be received from someone who has your e-mail address in his/her contact list. This is the reason why you need to send this e-mail

to all your contacts. It is better to receive this message 25 times than to receive the virus and open it.

If you receive a mail called” POSTCARD," even though sent to you by a friend, do not open it.! Shut down your computer immediately.

This is the worst virus announced by CNN. It has been classified by Microsoft as the most destructive virus ever. This virus was discovered by McAfee yesterday, and there is no repair yet for this kind of virus. This virus simply destroys the Zero Sector of the Hard Disc, where the vital information is kept.

COPY THIS E-MAIL, AND SEND IT TO YOUR FRIENDS. REMEMBER: IF YOU SEND IT TO THEM, YOU WILL BENEFIT ALL OF US

Hi good if it is but I put it on here because the warning came from a reliable source, our server provider and the computer support company. They seem to be taking this one seriously? They may be wrong but with the amount of potential harm which comes from some of these emails it always good to becareful.

Hi Derek - of course you mean well, but alas you are the victim in being prompted to waste your own time and Internet bandwidth.

There is only one really useful message - make sure your anti-virus measures are up to date and that your OS and firewall patches and updates are up to date. And of course never open any attachments or click on links in emails from anyone you don't know or from people you DO know if the emails look out of character.

Ian

Re: Email Virus the worse seen so far becareful!!

I know Derek. It's very easy to get fooled by these things. There's several hoaxes like this every year and they get more and more plausible. All they are asking people to do is send emails to everyone they know - certainly this irritant might clog up email services if widely implemented....and that's the intention.

Always best to check these things out. They quoted Microsoft and McCafee for example. So I went there first - nothing. Then checked out the latest viruses and hoaxes - and there it was.

IUf you get one just delete it like the spam irritation it is.

Thanks for alerting us all to something you genuinely thought was a problem. I once emailed everyone in my organisation about a similar hoax. Oh well we all live and learn.

Hi Derek

Time for a new IT support company if thet are being that shoddy methinks...

Like the others who have responded I agree this is a hoax. Being an IT manager I get about one a week sent from one of our users, but unlike your support I take the time to check them out.

If something s real it's going to be on the main pages on the McAfee site http://us.mcafee.com/virusInfo/ or the other main antivirus suppliers websites. Don't take anyone elses word for it.

Ian's comments re antivirus are spot on. NEVER risk going on-line (or even offline - I've known some big names send viruses out before the internet was any size! ) without it !

Regards
Andy

I agree - I have the corpse of an old PC to prove it. Bought 2nd hand from my wife's workplace with outdated anti-virus, and I didn't know enough then to sign up for AVG and a good anti-spy & firewall. Slowly died. One day I may get round to trying to erase the hard drive and get it working again...
