The Friday Question - Shaken or Stirred?

Continuing the theme started by one of the forum's illustrious members of asking an important question on a Friday just when you wanted to relax.

The new James Bond film has sponsorhsip by a vodka company. Does this mean he will now be asking for a vodka martini rather than the traditional gin based one? So I will leave you with 2 questions to answer.

Shaken or Stirred?
Traditional Gin based Martini cocktail or a Vodka Martini?

Vodka? This surely heralds the beginning of the end for the British Empire!

Straight G&T with ice and a slice. Can't see the point of Vodka - no taste!

But you cannot beat a nice malt, either Scottish, Japanese, Irish, or Indian. Not Welsh though! (ducks and runs)

Re: The Friday Question - Shaken or Stirred?

Do you know, I've never tried any Martini cocktails. Do people still drink these? It all seems a little 1970's to me, but then I'm not very sophisticated. These days I drink very little (hardly at all) but when I do I prefer one glass of red wine, a half of hand-pumped bitter, or a modest glass of single malt.

Re: The Friday Question - Shaken or Stirred?

The original drink as told by Mr Fleming was Vesper Martini part gin, part vodka and a touch of Lillet Blanc wine. It was changed for the films when Smirnoff sponsored one of the early ones. I think it's remained the same ever since.

As I'm going down the yacht club to eat with some friends this evening I might try a Vesper Martini.

Only in the spirit of investigation of course to enable me to report back to this forum.

There's some interesting English malt now some of which hails from East Anglia.

Of course gin is more English and there are so many different types with a huge variety of strengths and botanicals. We had a gin tasting earlier this year at the yacht club and that proved to be a splendid evening of sampling a wide selection.

Of course again, in common with my other post, I only did it in the spirit of investigation.

Vespa Martini..? That will be well shaken, then

I became well acquainted with Winter Pimms the other night, not exactly Bond tipple though.

Re: The Friday Question - Shaken or Stirred?

Being of Welsh ancestry I'd like to try Welsh whisky although there's not much chance of finding it in Canada.

Just out of interest, what car is Bond driving in the new film?

Tanks Peter, they keep showing a clip of Daniel Craig walking towards a car covered in a sheet on the TV over here but never show him uncovering it.

Sounds a bit like the launch of a new camera.

Thank for all the interesting responses - keep them coming.

I caught a repeat of Licence To Kill last night and I'm sure Bond asked for a vodka martini. Was this sthe film you were thinking of Hec?

Re: The Friday Question - Shaken or Stirred?

I agree with stephen a G & T does it for me though I am not adverse to good Islay Malt such as Lagavulin or Laphroig. Incidently the best G & Ts are just now at Wetherspoons. They have great range of gins and some good tonics as in the likes of Fentimans and a double is around £3 50. Happy Christmas

Re: The Friday Question - Shaken or Stirred?

As noted Mr Bond will have no issue with Vodka in his Martini

"A dry martini,’ he said. ‘One. In a deep champagne goblet.’

‘Oui, Monsieur.’

‘Just a moment. Three measures of Gordon’s, one of vodka, half a measure of Kina Lillet. Shake it very well until it’s ice-cold, then add a large thin slice of lemon-peel. Got it?’

‘Certainly, monsieur.’

Casino Royale, Chapter 7

Mind you the vodka is the only spirit not named specifically so I suspect that Mr Bond wasn't fussy on that aspect
