The light in the unicorn shot's very nice. I'm drawn to the two guys outside the chippy but that may be because I'm craving real fish and chips.

Re: Thaxted Morris Dancing - Now With Pictures!

Here's the famous Horn Dance finale:

I uploaded this in full HD - it took 2 hours to upload - we 'only' have 3 megabit upload speed here at home (and an hour to render before uploading, and I have quite a fast laptop!)

By the way I was an E-M1 with the Panasonic Leica 42.5mm f/1.2, which goes some way to explaining the very thin dof and generally bad focus! I was also focusing manually.

Re: Thaxted Morris Dancing - Now With Pictures! (and video!)

Like most people, I enjoy watching Morris Men perform, but have no idea what each dance represents or the meaning of the steps. I have never seen the Horn Dance before, Ian, and as you say a little eerie especially performed after dark.
Thanks to you both for all your images, maybe next year I will make it too

Re: Thaxted Morris Dancing - Now With Pictures! (and video!)

I'm impressed by the video, Ian, considering the conditions in which it was shot! Shame about the passing air traffic from Stansted and I apologize for not turning off my focus confirmation beep!

Re: Thaxted Morris Dancing - Now With Pictures! (and video!)

Great shots from both of you and the Abbots Bromley Horn Dance is certainly eerie.

Really disappointed I wasn't able to join you bit as David says, hopefully next year.

Thanks for sharing.

Nice second set John. The first shot and the mono conversion are the stand outs for me.

Re: Thaxted Morris Dancing - Now With Pictures! (and video!)

All these shots provide a great insight to this obviously very English event. Looks like you had a great time. I agree that last video is quite haunting any idea what the meaning is behind it?

Re: Thaxted Morris Dancing - Now With Pictures! (and video!)

An absolutely superb set of images of what looks like a wonderful few hours. Really regret not being able to join you guys.

The horn dance is entrancing and spooky at the same time.

Many thanks for posting all these images chaps. I really enjoyed looking though these.

I'm no expert but I think the Abbot's Bromley Horn Dance is something different?

The Abbots Bromley Horn Dance is, of course, performed in Abbots Bromley (Staffordshire) but the Thaxted Morris Men do an authentic "cover version" and have done so for many years. In fact, I believe that these days in Abbots Bromley the music is provided by an accordian player, whereas the lone fiddler used by Thaxted is more traditional.

Ian
I just took the information from the "Official Programme" which John posted at the beginning of this thread.

This prompted me to do a bit of research and the known and hypothesised history of the dance is fascinating.

Regards.

Now you've let the cat out of the bag John. Expect an EU directive from Brussels to say that the dance can only be performed in Abbots Bromley by members of the Bently/Fowell family.

Regards.

Or to state that the dance is banned completely because it fails to embrace the multi-cultural ethos of the European Union.

Isn't that an oxymoron with all the right wing eurosceptic parties winning so many seats in the recent election?
