Re: Do Olympus Cameras really need washing

Yeah - this was shown by someone else a few days ago and I think it's wholly irresponsible because the environmental sealing is not designed for this kind of treatment. If anyone tries this with their own camera - well more fool them!

Surely no worse than Olympus visionaries "washing" the E-M5 under a waterfall when that came out...?

Re: Do Olympus Cameras really need washing

I did it with my E-3 about 3 years ago when the two of us got accidentally drenched in sea water. I figured that as the camera was already soaked, rinsing the salt water off under a running tap would be the lesser of the two evils. The 14-54mm was fitted at the time and both camera and lens still work perfectly. I would not recommend it if not absolutely necessary, though. I'm sure that I could have resummed shooting, but I seemed more distressed by the experience than the E-3 and rinsing my clothes would have been pointless. It was a cold day anyway, so I went home.

Skip to about 1:05 for some bad treatment of an E5!

Re: Do Olympus Cameras really need washing

I remember Don Morley, the motorsports photographer dropping his new 300mm in mud and wiping the front element off on his T shirt so he could continue shooting. He once said you've got the be prepared to risk thousands of pounds of equipment to get a shot that may only earn you 50.

There's a thread on here somewhere about the abuse people have put their equipment through.

Re: Do Olympus Cameras really need washing

I run my mobile phone under the tap if it gets mucky. I once had to do this when out with some friends after somebody knocked over a glass of beer.

At least it shuts up the Apple acolytes.

Re: Do Olympus Cameras really need washing

Perhaps that is what caused the delay with the E-M1s. It is not a quick process to put all those cameras through the 'Delicates' cycle in the washing machine before dispatch.
