Off to Skomer tomorrow for the night... wohooo can't wait.

... well... apart from the weather forecast that is!

I am booked into the accommodation on Skomer Island for the night tomorrow evening and I am really looking forward to it. I know the weather forecast is not good, but I have my hide and the island has several hides that can be used - I just hope the ferry/boat actually crosses!!

I am hoping for some 'firsts'; to view some Manx Shearwaters, maybe some Petrels, and to get a shot of the Little and Short Eared Owls on the island... but given the weather forecast I don't hold up much hope for the Owls to be honest. As for the Manx's... well there's an estimated 130,000 breeding Manx's on Skomer that return to the island after dusk, so the FL-50 has been fitted with fresh AA batteries, and the camera bag contains 8 spares so I hope to grab at least a few decent shots, wish me luck...

When I return I'll be more than happy to write a thread containing a review/diary of my mini-adventure and of my experiences if people are interested - let me know if anyone is and I'll gladly draft something.

I am all packed, will be up at 05:30 setting off at 06:00 in the morning, first boat across (as long as weather is kind) is at 10:00, but I need to get my car booked into a local farm first and have a 15 minute walk to the beach where the boat departs.

So... I won't be around for a day or so... have fun!

John,

Looking forward to some Manx Shearwaters if you get them. The puffins were good but puffinus puffinus would be a real catch.

I so hate you John!

Hope the weather is kinder than you fear. Look forward to seeing your results - and reading your suggested thread. I'm certain a lot of us would find it interesting.

Have a lovely time, I look forward to seeing your pictures. Sadly, the weather forecast isn't too good, but I'm sure you'll manage

Re: Off to Skomer tomorrow for the night... wohooo can't wait.

We've not heard back from John Yet, but I can confirm that the weather has been B****din awful in South Wales.

I think that the forecast undercooked how had it was going to be. I was down to 40 MPH on the M4 yesterday and there were a couple of good showers that made me glad I was in the office for the day today !

Thank goodness John has the weatherproofed E-3 !

Regards
Andy

Well he's been on-line, so unless the www spreads to the nether regions of purgatory I think we can assume John wasn't washed too far off the Island.

My money is on him being busy preparing another excellent set of images.

Ah well - hopefully only a short wait before I again become envious of the excellence of his images.

I wonder how he coped in the rain with that little Sigma lens?

Nick

Re: Off to Skomer tomorrow for the night... wohooo can't wait.

Hey all - I'm back from what was a superb experience and it's nice to see I am talked about when away - hehe Despite the weather, the magic of Skomer finds its way into ones soul as soon as one sets foot on the island, and I had a wonderful time. I have started writing up the experience, and as Nick suggested, am preparing several images, and will start the diary update later this morning - hopefully. I took many shots but focussed mainly on several species of birds (not Puffins this time!!) but I shall post a few other images too.
