E-30 wireless flash question

Hi

Ok i have been playing about with the wireless flash system on my e-30 with my metz 48 and it seems cool but one question the popup flash is only supposed to act as a trigger right?. Because when i have the wireless flash set to normal flash mode in the wireless setup menu the popup flash is affecting the lighting of the image big style but when i switch to FP mode it works as i would expect just as a trigger, has anyone else experienced this or am i wrong in the assumption that its only ment to act as a trigger.

thank you
Craig

Re: E-30 wireless flash question

Only a guess without knowing your settings, but....

...if your onboard is set to TTL and the off-camera flash is also set to TTL, they'll both try to do an equal amount to light the scene.

Maybe when set to FP the shutter speed is going up past normal sync speed, so the onboard isn't really registering due to the higher shutter speed, as the onboard won't do FP flash? Have never used wireless with Olympus, but the 'Communication Light Level' setting looks like it might be a culprit as well?

Try it with both of them set to TTL and non-FP, and turn the flash intensity value for the onboard down to about -4 and see what happens.

The image is from the E620 manual, but I'd imagine much the same as the E-30 for this....

I'm sure someone will be along very soon with a definite answer rather than my guess...

Re: E-30 wireless flash question

That's a bit of a head scratcher... how far away was the subject you were taking the picture of?

I'll be looking for a flash very soon, and that Metz looks very interesting - can it do everything the FL-50R can do, or are there some restrictions with it?

Re: E-30 wireless flash question

hi

i wasnt far from the subject only about 60cm but its just annoying as i though it was only a trigger as for the metz i find it very good i cant say how good it is compared with the 50r but its a lot lot cheaper im actually thinking about buying another one if i can get this wireless problem sorted

Re: E-30 wireless flash question

Hmm, I'd try something a bit further away, as there is obviously always some light coming from the pop-up to trigger the Metz.... the closer you are the more likely that this light will show in the result.... had this problem myself with another system with close ups and ended up taping a piece of ND flash gel over the pop-up...

Re: E-30 wireless flash question

Would like to know the answer to this myself - although it should work in any mode, can only think that in FP mode that Metz is actually pulsing rapidly (as it should) and the camera is syncing with those pulses rather than the single flash that the pop up is giving, therefore showing only the result of the Metz lighting the subject....

Re: E-30 wireless flash question

I have come late to this discussion and may well have completely misunderstood the issues What's more both camera and flash are different but not hugely so. On my E-520 and Metz-58 I do the following

Flash
ModeTTL SelRemoteON

Camera
MenuRC MODEON
Flash Mode Always on (Single Lightning Symbol)
Wireless Set to TTL

Seems to work ok.

There is in the Super Control Panel a setting for Communication Light Level.

If the above is irrelevant please ignore
