I would really like to try this lens but I am losing hope that I will see it in my lifetime!
Hi Ian,
I might have missed an announcement, but is the Olympus 12 ~ 40mm f2.8 M Zuiko Micro Four Thirds Lens available for hire yet?

My local stockist has said they can order one if I want it, but at the price I would rather try one first!

I am reasonably happy with the standard 12 ~ 50 millimetre zoom, but it is too slow for much of my indoor work, and I feel could also be sharper (and less prone to flare and hazy images) under some conditions.

Any news would be welcome!

Regards,

Nigel.

Hi Nigel - sorry for any confusion but we announced in the hire page two months ago that E-M1s and 12-40s were available - see:

http://e-group.uk.net/hire

They are not on the main price list as we're in the process of re-calculating and updating the stock entries. Some prices are going down and some are going up.

But please do get in touch if you would like to book a 12-40 although we currently only have two examples available.

Ian

Re: Olympus 12-40mm f2.8 M Zuiko Lens

The 12 ~ 40 hire lens arrived here safely on Friday, and it doesn't disappoint!

In some ways it's a shame the EM5 doesn't have an optical viewfinder as I'm sure this lens would be a treat to use, with the image being both bright and crisp. However, even with the EM5's electronic viewfinder the image snaps in and out of focus very decisively, and the photographs I have taken so far appear pin sharp from edge to edge even when the aperture is wide open.

I was particularly interested on the lens's wide angle performance, but it doubles as a good portrait lens at the 40 mm end. It would have been even better if it went to 50 millimetres, but I guess you can't have everything.

I realise this isn't the place for a lens review, but I just wanted to thank Ian and his team for their efficiency (and trust!), and to let you all know this is one very, very nice lens!

The 12 ~ 40 is rather pricey, but somehow I think I will be buying one very soon!

Carmarthen Cameras have got them for £729.99 at the moment - I think that is only a short term deal - http://www.carmarthencameras.co.uk/p...thirds-cameras

I would like to report that I ordered the lens from Carmarthen, which arrived next morning, so an excellent service all round.

I have now used the lens in anger, and must say it more than lives up to my expectations. I wish it went a little further than 40 mm at the long end, but you cannot have everything. I have the 40 ~ 150 f4.0 ~ f5.6 lens, but somehow suspect I will be looking for something faster soon., especially given that I seem to have permanently 'lost' my E5 to my son!

The Panasonic 35-100mm f2.8 LUMIX G looks very attractive, and presumably works well on OMD bodies?

I just need to find out how to get my hire charges refunded by Olympus UK now.

Re: Olympus 12-40mm f2.8 M Zuiko Lens

I'm very pleased by my recently acquired 35-100. Very sharp - nearly as sharp as the 75mm but not quite. Fast to focus, well-built, slightly lighter than the 12-40.

That sounds like a good recommendation Stephen. Does the lens's inbuilt image stabilisation work on Olympus bodies?

Re: Olympus 12-40mm f2.8 M Zuiko Lens

There's a setting within the E-M1 to allow it to prefer lens IS where switched on, but I've not tried it. I keep the lens IS off and rely on the IBIS.

BTW, when I bought mine used from Wex, they had another.

Yes it does if you configure the camera appropriately (turn IS off, for a start). More recent Olympus bodies now have a menu option to enable selection between lens OIS and sensor IS.

In general, though, Olympus' sensor IS is best.

If you look at my thread in FF "There once was ...", they were taken with this lens.

Hi, I'm wanting to hire the 12-40mm f2.8 but I still can't find it on the list and therefore can't find a price. Can someone point me in the right direction please?

Sorry - email hire at e-group.uk.net and I will prepare a quote for you. Basically it starts from £33.60 for the minimum three day hire period, including VAT but not shipping (if required).
