Comments in threads on pics v's comments in gallery on pics... how do you manage?

Hey All

Here's an interesting confusing item.

As we all do, I regularly post images in the gallery on here, then I usually use the link to post the image in a thread for feedback and discussion. I had a look in my gallery this morning for a reference to an image I had posted some weeks ago, and spotted that I had received many comments within threads in the gallery that I (1) hadn't been notified about and (2) made me feel really guilty for not replying to the kind comments that had been made.

So - is it perhaps a conflict to have a comments section within the gallery...?

How do you all manage this...? I wonder if there is a mod for this so that any comments made to the gallery images within the gallery appear as threads in a specific 'Gallery Forum Threads' category...? Ian...?

There's definitely a conflict here where people have to look in two places for comments on their photos.

Thoughts...?

Is there more in my gallery too? How would I know?

Visit the gallery pages, and on the second line under the main navgation bar are a selection of further options:

My Photos · My Albums · My Favorites · [ 22 messages ]

... which as you can see in my case has 22 messages I knew nothing about The messages are comments and replies to my images in the gallery and these don't appear on the forum. I was wondering if they (1) could appear on the forum or (2) appear when the 'new posts' link was pressed..?

I am in the habit of checking my gallery on a regular basis to catch up with any comments that may have been made and will respond appropriately at that time, I do it that way as I figured that is what the gallery was for, in my experience any comments sought elsewhere on the forum would be notified to you via e mail as an addition to the thread, they can be responded to at that time if you wish.
It works for me anyway

Thats all right then. I knew about those messages. I thought you meant some didn't hit that counter, which would be awkward. I think you can reset it if that helps

Seriously, these are signs of having too much to do.... have you thought about employing a butler to help on some of these things!

Peter

BTW no need to reply to any of my notes I don't want to add to the pressure

Is this really a problem? You do see the message showing numbers of messages everytime you visit the gallery.....especially you guys who get loads of good comments

Works for me so far too.

Re: Comments in threads on pics v's comments in gallery on pics... how do you manage?

Cool that it works for you guys...

I am just not so sure that this is the most 'elegant' solution to the requirement of being able to comment on images. The default for notify of comments made in the gallery is 'off' and I cannot see anywhere to make this default for 'on' for my account. That issue alone is frustrating, but coupled with the fact that there are two areas where one should check for comments further exacerbates the problem.

If there were a method where all comments/replies to gallery images were able to appear within a specific forum category that gets displayed on the main page with all the other categories, and then appeared under 'new posts', then this would solve the problem 100% and a win-win resolution would ensue.

I do see what you are saying. It would be a nice tweak to make a more 'elegant' solution. I wonder how much Admin flexibility there is when it comes to embedded ways of doing things?

Re: Comments in threads on pics v's comments in gallery on pics... how do you manage?

Well, vBulletin is a superb product, I use it on my forum with over 500,000 posts and close to 10,000 members... it is flexible and has many plug-ins for the code.

I don't however, use PhotoPosts - which is a Gallery add-on for vBulleting, which Ian uses here so I am unsure as to the Admin features behind the scenes of the gallery.

Happy to have a look if Ian wishes me to...

Well, one first needs to ascertain if this functionality is already available within the PhotoPost product. If it is, then Ian can make a decision as to how to use it - case closed.

If not, then I guess we have the as-is situation.

Though I own a vBulletin site, and know the product very well, I don't own Photopost and as such have asked over on their forums if this functionality is available.

Here's the thread in case anyone wishes to follow it.

just looked at my Gallery, I've got 13 comments that I didn't know where there Thanks to all who commented.

I need to start using my E forum Gallery more as I normally just link via my webspace.
