Lightroom use...

Hi All

Hope this doesn't offend anyone here.

I am not a Lightroom expert by any means, but I have been using the app for some time now, so have some knowledge of it's more oft used features. I tend to use Lightroom now for 99% of my images, rarely venturing into the world of Photoshop or its many equivalents.

I know that in threads, many of us often suggest getting hold of the demo copy of Lightroom and trying it out, especially to those new(ish) to photography. So, with this in mind, and am more than happy to create some screen captures or prepare some video demos - of the more common items in Lightroom - if people wish.

I'd prefer to work from requests for specific functionality rather than second guess what people might like to see.

I don't pretend to know all there is to know about LR, and I know there are many LR users on here far more experienced than I, but I am happy to have a stab at this and help out where I can.

Not promising anything brilliant... but do please shout if there's any specific requests....

Re: Lightroom use...

Sounds a great idea John, if you can spare the time it would be very helpful.

I have always used photoshop and have tried using lightroom, the problem I had was not so much using the functions of the program, but managing the workflow of how to store your files and then to use lightroom to browse and edit.

This must sound a little crazy, but from using photoshop I cant get my head around using the management of lightroom with making the changes to a photo and then its not stored in the actual files

So if you can make a basic introduction to the workflow of lightroom I would find that most useful and would be a good starting point for beginners

Many thanks - Steve

John, would it not be possible to put a section in the forum where people can leave tips, get help & ask questions for both lightroom & Photoshop, as most image software seems to get everyone confused!

Re: Lightroom use...

Hi,
Like steve I have used Photoshop and seem to have the same problems with lightroom.
What I do find it very good for is downloading from your cards.
The film strip makes it very easy to view and sort through the shots, deleting what you don't want as you go.
I do like how it automaticly stores the images in date order.

Like Steve a introduction to a Lightroom workflow would be helpful

A very good idea John

The trouble with trying to create a video to show workflow in Lightroom is that there are many ways one can carry out ones workflow. I guess a video showing the way I use LR for my own workflow would serve to illustrate (1) how I do it, and (2) perhaps provide pointers as to how others could adapt this flow to their own use.

I'll put this on the list, thanks Steve.

I am happy to explain how stuff works as well as to create vids for the more elaborate explanations, but I am not 100% sure a category dedicated to LR would be so useful. Not everyone uses it, sure a lot of us do, but a dedicated section would imply we should also have a dedicated section on Photoshop, PSP et al, and this obviously isn't what's needed. We already have a dedicated Software section, I had intended to include any LR related items in there; at least for the time being. Hope this is OK Edward.

Hi Derek - LR does a lot more than assist in downloading from your cards, hehe. It does look like an intro to workflows might be a good one to start with.

Olympus Master is surprisingly effective at times, but it lacks any kind of batch facility or some of the more powerful image adjustment controls. It's a great place to start.

Up until I started my OU course that was the only software I used, but we're instructed on Elements for the course, so I currently use that... not sure whether I'll stick with that software, or go back to the Olympus software

Re: Lightroom use...

Has anyone looked at the following:

http://tv.adobe.com/show/learn-lightroom-20/

There seems to be quite a bit there.

Also, http://www.adobe.com/designcenter/li...tutorials.html

Had a look at a couple of them and they seem quite good.

There's loads of resources out there, and very good they are too, but I thought it a nice gesture to offer to produce some specific tutorials just in case someone wanted something in particular.

I'm sure I am not able to produce tutorials up to the quality of those which you have linked to, but it seemed to me to be a good thing to do for (1) members here to have specific tutorials as per their specific requests, (2) for eGroup to have access to another 'egroup created' resource, and (3) for me to learn the basics of preparing video tutorials.

Re: Lightroom use...

I would like to know how to print borderless from LR 2, using custom print size. I have done it but now it will not do it, every print has a border.

That sounds like a tick box checked that shouldn't be Dave - either in LR, or somewhere in your printer control panel.

I checked my printer settings and Print module area in LR, and mine prints off with no border as per my selection.

I wasn't suggesting it shouldn't be done, I agree it is a good idea. My pointers were basically things I had looked at before and thought they may be of use to others .... if they hadn't come across them already!
