Re: ALERT..Hijacked by 'Adobe Genuine Software Integrity Service"

Just checked my Lr 6 and all seems fine, despite provoking it by looking for updates.

Re: ALERT..Hijacked by 'Adobe Genuine Software Integrity Service"

By the way, if you do have a web email account hacked, beware that any messages you had left on the server at the time (i.e. in In-box, Sent, Trash etc folders) may have been downloaded by the hackers and anyone else they've sold the information to until you changed your password.

As a result, some people have had various 'secure' accounts hacked because they'd been emailed account numbers, access codes etc. by their bank, solicitor and so on in the past and the messages were still sitting there.

So, I don't recommend being too relaxed about this, and it's a good incentive to keep message numbers on such servers to a minimum. Obviously it may take them some time to sift through the millions of compromised accounts...

I don't use webmail, I prefer to have my e-mail stored locally where I can keep an eye on it, and none of it gets left on a server for any significant length of time!

So, importantly, have you started to take backups yet?
Believe me, if you havenít, there *will* come a time when you will regret it.

No, remiss of me I know, if it were Malware is there a risk I could be infecting the backup as well?

Probably / potentially but depending on the malware itís usually much easier to deal with on an external drive.
I donít know how much actual, viable MacOS malware is actually out there in the wild but Iíd guess it is a small fraction compared to Windows stuff.

One thing is certain, simply phoning the number on the pop-up won't infect anything and will answer all your concerns one way or the other.

Not really a safe suggestion for all mystery pop ups though!

This is not a mystery pop-up but one confirmed by Adobe as being genuine, what harm can phoning the number possibly inflict ?

Unless of course you have doubts regarding the validity of your software.

Hence my comment about it not necessarily safe in other cases, obviously youíd only be in danger if the other end were able to convince you to do something or hand over specific info but in those cases the very fact youíve been suckered in enough to even phone the number must indicate a weakness in the first place.

I have read what you and others have said and taken onto account 'Stormforces' opinion.
But is was just one guy's opinion, he had never come across it before, this in it's self seemed a little odd to me. In fact I knew more than he did and had to walk him through it. He did seek advice from other assistants in the shop.

When it first popped up my initial immediate reaction was 'SCAM' and there it remained, stuck in place with 'superglue'.

I had to reboot every time to get shot of it for a while, then it would reappear....reboot etc.

It didn't feel right, not like I would have expected from someone like Adobe.

I still remain unconvinced either way and am treating it with contempt it deserves, until I'm satisfied with an explanation to the contrary.

But, but, it has not popped up since Saturday, why I don't know. Stormdront did not charge me because by his own admission he did NOTHING.

If it reappears l'll repost.
