Littlewoods Pools Building

Inside the Littlewoods Building

I heard about the fire in the Littlewoods building on the news this morning, and was slightly surprised because I hadn't known that Littlewoods Pools or the Littlewoods Pools building still existed.

It seems that Littlewoods Pools no longer exists, but that the Littlewoods Building was in the process of being converted into film studios.

The BBC report above provides a fascinating history with some wonderful B&W photographs from back in the day when 300,000 of us filled in the Pools coupons every week.

Re: Littlewoods Pools Building

I suspect I must be a bit further down on the Age Survey poll results as I’ve no real recollection of doing the pools myself just of parents doing them and having to check them laboriously each Sat afternoon. Seem to remember them and a couple of other companies? John Moores possibly?

Like you I didn't do the Pools myself but I can remember my parents and other relatives doing them. In fact one of my uncles won around £30,000 on the Pools, which was a fortune in the late 1960's!

I think I do remember John Moores but they were much smaller than Littlewoods and were possibly bought up by them.

Re: Littlewoods Pools Building

Fascinating, thanks Nigel. I don't know why, but for some reason it feels like it has more chance of succeeding than a lot of pie-in-the-sky projects (Anyone remember London's garden bridge for instance?).

Weren't the other pools Vernons?

John

Oh yes, Vernon’s, I’d forgotten them. There were more than those two I’m sure.
Going back to Nigel’s comment about winning £30K, wasn’t it about that amount that resulted in the program or maybe it was a fillum, called ‘Spend, Spend, Spend’. I want to say the winners name was Viv Richardson but maybe I’m confusing her with Ian Botham!

I think a 'big' win in those days was £100,000 plus, but £30,000 would have bought two or three reasonable sized houses at the time.

Sadly my uncle (my mother's brother) died soon afterwards owing to a stroke, and his wife spent the rest of her life being a mean old bitch in comfortable misery! Money doesn't buy happiness.

Ahh now, I think Vernons were yet another Pools company along with John Moores. But now you mention it I think Vernons were much bigger than John Moores.

What fascinated me was the industrial scale of the operation checking the Pools coupons in the days before electronic scanning!

The other big gambling game in those days was 'Spot the Ball' or something similar. I understand the entries were checked by placing an acetate over each one in turn.

Re: Littlewoods Pools Building

Ah, a time when people were gainfully employed. As much as I have to thank the computer revolution for a happy working lifetime spent in its clutches, it’s sad to see the loss of jobs it always promised it would bring. Shame the savings haven’t been passed on to the workers who lost their livelihoods. Bit like the railways nowadays, striking over one man operated trains. Who’s (not so) great idea was that?

Re: Littlewoods Pools Building

Years ago, I ran a Pet Commodore computer (16k RAM!!). I typed in a Pools winning programme, and saved it on Tape. I used it first with a group of enthusiastic pools players at work. The first run produced a good result, no winnings though. The second and all subsequent runs produced total rubbish results...……..

My street cred was never the same again...………….

Re: Littlewoods Pools Building

The lottery replaced the pools, takes less time to take part in and it gets instant results after checking.

Re: Littlewoods Pools Building

Probably had better odds on winning the pools. The Lottery is a tax on stupidity really, particularly for people who are crap at maths!

The Pools did need skill, and depending on the football results there must have been some weeks that nobody won a penny.

Didn't they used to have a 'Pools Panel' during the closed season?

Of course in those days football was only played on Saturdays and Bank Holidays. There were no Sunday games and probably not many weekday games. Maybe footballers even had 'proper' jobs during the week then?

John Moores and another guy were the two who started Littlewoods Pools, and Vernons were smaller than Littlewoods.

Back in the 90's I was in a syndicate of five people, and put on the same numbers weekly, through an agent of Littlewoods. We never won anything, but the woman who filled out the coupon was on one occasion, not available and another woman filled out the coupon incorrectly. That was the week that our normal numbers came up, with the result that we lost out to the tune of £84,000.
