Metabones Firmware update V2.4 for Canon EF to Micro Four Thirds Smart Adapter

Metabones have just released a new FW version for the Smart Adapter, which adds C-AF support for the EM-1.

Thought that some of you may be interested.

I plan to test it as soon as it stops raining.

Hi tordan, and thanks from all for your information I shall look into this. I am not sure that the firmware is applicable to my metabones mount T adapter. So will check it out,
Kind regards Mike.
PS. yes it seems it is and I abhor firmware updates!

Re: Metabones Firmware update V2.4 for Canon EF to Micro Four Thirds Smart Adapter

I took the opportunity for a quick field test today in between the showers (more rain expected for the week to come). The CAF performs quite well and is definitely usable. It is not exactly lightning fast but with prefocusing chance is the camera will deliver at least one frame in focus from a burst of 3 or 4.

I did set CAF, all focus points (37 in effect), FPS high (9FPS), no stopping down. I perceived that the actual FPS the setup can deliver was around 3, perhaps a bit more. A tad less than with S-AF. And less than with 4/3 lenses.

The samples below are taken with the Canon 400/5.6 USM. Apologies for far from ideal light and wind directions, however the frames are in focus (which is what I wanted to test).

I think you have to try the L mode with 6fps, you may have a better success and you can track better with Liveview.

Why would L mode produce better results?

Re: Metabones Firmware update V2.4 for Canon EF to Micro Four Thirds Smart Adapter

First of all on L mode you have Liveview and you can follow better the target, in H mode you see only frames as you take them, on L mode every frame has separate exposure , on H mode the exposure is fix on first frame and last there is a different behavior as you focus on L and H mode, try it an let me know if you want.

Re: Metabones Firmware update V2.4 for Canon EF to Micro Four Thirds Smart Adapter

Not sure I understand what you mean with "different behavior".

I usually shoot bif in manual exposure/AEL so that will not be affected.

As the smart adapter is the bottleneck the actual fps performance would probably be same using H or L.

Will try and let you know about the results.

Thanks
Tord

Re: Metabones Firmware update V2.4 for Canon EF to Micro Four Thirds Smart Adapter

Olympus uses different focus routines on L and H mode, maybe with the metabones adapter can't see a difference but try it with your 43 lenses and you will, after all if the behaviour is exactly the same why Olympus on both modes has an option in the menus to restrict the fps from 9fps (H mode) or 6.5fps (Lmode) to slower frame rates?

As I understand it in H mode the focus on CAF uses only the PDAF focus points and only if the light drops too much CDAF comes to help, on L mode the focus routines are different and more hybrid, there is always CDAF+PDAF engaged during focus. My suggestion won't fix adapter frame-rate bottleneck but maybe helps with focus accuracy.

Re: Metabones Firmware update V2.4 for Canon EF to Micro Four Thirds Smart Adapter

Hi,

Thanks for the tips. I remember reading about this hybrid AF, still a mystery to me.

I went back and tested using L FPS mode and indeed I could feel there was a difference in AF acquisition, hard to explain but it felt faster and more consistent. Still far from ot perfect, the camera had issues keeping up with the Terns in their playful mood.

These are with the Canon 400/5.6 USM, taken in crappy light, overcast, almost raining, calling for ISO 1000+ and still hard to get shutter times < 1/1000s. Given these conditions they are acceptable I think.

They look good to me Tord. I am still really struggling with C-AF, so any details of your settings would be most welcome. For example: how many AF points, Shutter or Aperture priority, IS on or off, release priority on or off, etc.

Re: Metabones Firmware update V2.4 for Canon EF to Micro Four Thirds Smart Adapter

I have now taken upwards of 20,000 shots with the E-M1/Canon 400/5.6/Metabones Smart adapter (BM1), and for me V2.1 is the last reliable firmware for the adapter. 2.2 caused frequent blackouts, 2.3 wouldn't work with the Extenders (1.4x and 2x Mark III) and 2.4 has slower S-AF, often not finding the target at all, and C-AF is too slow to be of any use what so ever, aside from blocking burst mode. I keep going back to 2.1 as it is fast and very accurate.
I have made myself a sort of adjustable "gun sight" for action/BiF and it is a BIG help!
012.jpg 010.jpg
The size is the full frame with just the 400.
It is too difficult to keep things in the frame with the 400, even without a TC, and when the focus is a bit off it is impossible. But this lets me see everything and tracking is very easy. I set the release priority to off and use all 37 focus points, and either 10 or 7 fps, silent mode if the light is not good. Against the sky I add +.7 to +1 EV, point, and shoot. Just have to keep the bird in the frame/cross hairs.
Here is a sample from yesterday, a 200% crop of a shot with the 400+1.4x TC.

My sample and test shots with the BM-1 are here.

Welcome to the forum, Dan.

That cross hair sight looks really useful.

Did you try MB 2.4 using sequential L?

Re: Metabones Firmware update V2.4 for Canon EF to Micro Four Thirds Smart Adapter

Hi Tord,
Yes I did and it is useless. Max 3 fps and only the first in focus. S-AF is much worse than 2.1 on anything but clear, contrasty subjects, and there I don't see any improvement over 2.1.
