Exclamation Windows 10

As there will be some that update to Windows 10, we may as well keep all the posts in one place.

Re: Windows 10

I'm not updating my W7 machine to W10.

As I've mentioned elsewhere, after a long search I managed to find a W7 driver for my Canoscan FS2710 film scanner and I don't want to risk losing it on an update.

I've also blocked WAN access by the machine at the router, thus preventing further updates. I only use the machine for Photoshop anyway and this action should protect against any attack from outside. The machine still has access to my media server via the LAN.

I could periodically unblock WAN access just to check for W7 updates, but I really can't see the need.

Re: Windows 10

Those who propose to leave W10 updates until v 10.1 might have the right idea.

It's beginning to look that the W10 updates are not as problem free as we would like or have been told to believe it would be. There are many who have fallen foul - or should that be fowl... as in road kill?

I hope this is the only PC device on your network and it is the only machine you use to access your media server, or I would advise a rethink.

Your machine will no longer be getting any security updates (and they still come for Win7 until 2020) and AV / Anti Malware

If any device or file on your network gets infected the malware will have a field day with this un-patched device. if you have just the one device then it may be OK but then how are you posting to this forum ?

if you've thought about all the other ways a file can get onto your machine and blocked them all then sorry for teaching you to suck eggs

Regards
Andy

Re: Windows 10

For those wishing to make a clean install of Windows 10 or to build a dual boot system, the various flavours of Windows 10 can be downloaded here in .iso format or for usb drive installation:

I hope this is of help.

That's very helpful Dave. I want to play with Win 10 for a while before I commit to cutting over from Win 7.

My eldest son has done that on his laptop, now he has a laptop that won't boot at all. Yes he does know what he is doing, builds his own computers and is good at solving problems but he is not pleased! I will be interested to see what he does but I will be leaving my upgrade for a little while I think!

Re: Windows 10

I only use one device, a desktop PC, and have yet to see any advantage to me of Windows 10 compared to 8.1, but I can anticipate plenty of potential for things to go wrong if I download the update. I'm not going to try fixing something that ain't broke!

I'm still running an old laptop with XP, that works perfectly well. It wouldn't take Windows 10 anyway

I'm going to sound like an Old Nag and I don't mean to upset, but I hope you are careful with use of that PC

the problem is that the code base between XP/VISTA/7 is fairly standard and when malware types find out about something that is being fixed on 7 then they immediately reverse engineer that for versions that are no longer being patched

I have an XP machine myself (old netbook perfect for travel downloads from my camera) but it no longer goes on any network and I would never consider consider using it for anything like internet banking even if I was desperate enough to do that somewhere when travelling.

Back on the point of W10 - one of the guys at work did it yesterday from 8.1 he said it went smoothly, but its going to be fully tested tonight. I'll tell you his thoughts tomorrow

Regards
Andy

Re: Windows 10

Upgraded last night, and did some testing tonight. Thoughts:

Went smoothly for me, but then again I was upgrading a fairly new Surface 3. I expect Microsoft tested it to death on its Surface devices. My advice? Know your make and model, and Google for issues with it and Windows 10. Is what you're seeing, on the various forums, giving you a nice warm feeling?

At the moment, I'm not so keen on Tablet Mode. It's a mystery to me why Microsoft thought the Windows 8.1 start screen, and the Windows 10 desktop, are somehow mutually exclusive.

The Wedge browser is lovely, albeit nor quite as standards compliant as Chrome or Firefox. It's an extremely fast experience.

Have a few applications open at once? The upgrade is worth it for the Task View, for me. Multiple desktops are also supported.

The Start Menu is something you're going to love or hate. Yes, it's back, but it's different.

Nothing broken, so far.... More when I know more.
