Metz MS-1 Ring Flash

I have just received my Ring Flash and have experienced some difficulties in using it with the E500 and wonder if anyone can help.

The ring flash can be operated wirelessly as a remote flash. I believe that the E500 does not support the wireless TTL mode. This led me to two options.

1. To use the ring flash in manual mode using the E500bbuilt in flash unit as a trigger.
2. To use the Metz 48 as a trigger flash with the ring flash set to Oly TTL.

With option 1 the results are extremely variable with little or no control on the light output other than setting the level manually each time on the ring flash.

With option 2 the results are much better and seem to give much better lighting results.

My question is - has anyone used such a set up and what would you recommend as the settings. I have not tried it on my E3 yet but would expect still better results.

Re: Metz MS-1 Ring Flash

I've recently bought a Metz MS-1 Ring Flash for my E3. I'm using it wirelessly and so far it's proved very easy to use and produces great results. As I no longer have an E500 I can't comment on the use of the flash on this model.

Thank you Jim for your reply. I too have the option to use it on the E3 but I am keeping that body for use with the Bigma. I may have to review this decision but hope that someone can give me the best set-up so that I can evaluate its use on the E500 properly.

Yesterday, I tried the ring flash on the E3. I thought all was well until I used it on a photo session and found the results were very iffy.

I am sure that it is down to my settings so, to confirm this and get the correct setup, I am seeking your support.

I set the RC mode to ON (camera 2 menu).
I am using only one remote flash (the Metz flash located on the end of the lens)
The flash control Mode A is set to TTL - Intensity set to +2
The othere chans (B and C) are left at their default values.
Normal Flash/Super Flash set to Normal Flash
Communication Light Level set to LO
Channel set to CH 1

On the Metz Ring Flash
Oly Group A

Any help here will be most welcome

Hi Peter - sorry I've not come back to you sooner.

Same as mine

Again, same as mine, but intensity left at +- 0.

In the fourth column there's a flash sign and '/FP'

I have channels B & C selected 'off'.

Not sure what the above is! If it's the extreme right column, mine's set to flash (the lightning sign).

I don't know what this is, or where the setting is!

Channel set to CH 1

Mine is this setting

IIRC, I basically set the flash as the manual says, and used the default RC camera setting that I use with my FL50R.

I won't say I've given the flash a good 'work out' but have been pleased with the few results I've had.

Hope this helps.

Jim

Re: Metz MS-1 Ring Flash

Thank you for your reply Jim,
The camera super control panel description I got from page 83 of the E3 Instruction manual. I too have now reduced the intensity settings and also switched to 'Super FP Flash'.
Things are much improved now and I seem to be getting consistent results - that is when I remember to allow for the flash to re-charge.

I am now waiting for the E3 replacement. When this arrives, I shall retire my old faithful E500. Probably hand it to my son.
