Hawk Conservancy Photo Day Sun 8th May

Hi, anyone going to attend this ?
It was on my Christmas List x 2 (I did not want to go on my own so DH Nick is coming too !)

I am hoping the rain keeps off, so the birds fly !

Does anyone know what "Lunch" there is ?

Would be great to join you, it's not far up the road, but I'll be on rugby duty. "The Season" finished a couple of weeks ago but there is still stuff going on. Last year the last match I shot was on 30th May!

Have a great day ... John

Re: Hawk Conservancy Photo Day Sun 8th May

If I am correct in my understanding of your original post, you have paid to go on a photographic day? If so, then only those who have booked and paid in advance to go on this will be able to go on it. The limit for the photographic days is 10 people.

You get the services of a falconer and one of the volunteers for the day, lots of birds to photograph in different settings (posed and in flight - just for you), a couple of 'tea breaks' and lunch included in the price. Bring a bin bag or something to lie on while you take photos from ground level - the grass may well be wet ! You also get to sit in on the 'showpiece' demonstration of the day - the 2.00pm 'Valley of the Eagles' display (if you have a bird phobia, this is not the demonstration to go to - they fly vultures across the audience !). It's a very relaxed and enjoyable day (I did one 2 years ago)

Having said that, it's less than 12 to visit for the day anyway, and well worth it!

Here's their website for more info: http://www.hawk-conservancy.org/index.asp

Re: Hawk Conservancy Photo Day Sun 8th May

Thea, THANKS LOTS for the tips about Bin Bags to lie on THE GRASS WILL BE WET after all this rain !

I was thinking 14-54 and 50-200 lenses ? I think BIGMA is too much ? what do you suggest Thea ?

Re: Hawk Conservancy Photo Day Sun 8th May

Hi

14-54 could be useful, and you might find that you have the 50-200 'welded' to the camera for most of the day, but you might also want to pack the Bigma as well because you may find it useful at the 2.00pm display (depending on where you are sitting of course!).

This display takes place in Reg's Wildflower Meadow (which is approx a 7 acre field full of wild flowers etc), and the display is designed for the birds that like to have more room to fly and soar in (kites, eagles and vultures). Plus - if the ground isn't too wet - the audience will also get a 'history lesson' (I won't say any more ).

A word of warning though - this place is addictive. First a photographic day, then a few visits turn into regular visits, which then turns into getting a year's membership..... - oh, that just might be me though !

Strangely enough, I am going on this photographic day with my daughter tomorrow as it happens, so most likely will see you there!

Thea

Re: Hawk Conservancy Photo Day Sun 8th May

Thea Thank YOU again for even more info !

We have been "Quite Often" as we live at Winchester ! We take the children for the Learning Experience (we look after, so its tax deductable ...

BUT so far, I have held back on Annual Membership - as we have Marwell; National Trust; Hampshire Culture Pass - to name but a few which give us so many PAID ONE go as many times as you like OUTINGS !

We look forward to seeing you there ! Nick has just got his "shooting mat out" from gun club days when laying down to shoot the target (no animals!) I have a pink Tchibo YOGA mat - wrong colour me thinks so Tartan Waterproof one side picnic rug will do me !

Just got back from Hilliers in Winch for Lawn seed - I took E5+14-52 and got some lovely shots of bees on Rhodi and Azaelas plants grass seed is so boring ...
