Exclamation Advanced notice - 10 minutes of down time on Wednesday morning at 8AM BST

I will be running a maintenance update (no change in external functionality) to the forum software. I have already done the forums on our other sites and it takes roughly 10 minutes, during which the forum will be closed.

Thanks!

Ian

This maintenance update has now completed - you may see posts you have already viewed as unread, sorry - that's a by product of the upgrade.

I had to sign back in too, but so far all looks good, except email notifications haven't come since 16:37 & it is now 17:27 EST (Sydney).
EDIT: Sorry, they have just come through.

Re: Advanced notice - 10 minutes of down time on Wednesday morning at 8AM BST

Morning Ian...

Sounds like you need a mid morning snooze if you've been up all night working on the upgrades...

Is this the new version of V Bulliten that you've implemented now? It handles new posts and read new posts differently and I have to admit to be struggling for the first few posts...

I now have several hundred unread posts to work through, to find most of them I have read. not too big an issue, I'll pick and choose.

Using the New Posts button did return you to a mixture of read and unread posts so you could read them, think about them and then re-enter the thread and reply, the newer version only displays unread threads this way, losing the ability to simply step back in... Maybe better for a more disciplined mind than mine.

I don't know if others prefer the new or old method best, but if its a simple parameter change could you switch back?

If not, no worries I'll just have to be more methodical!

Edit:

If I use the new posts button and click on "last 15 minutes" the new and read posts are displayed, so I'm happy now!

Yes, I'm sorry about the read status of the posts - this is likely because the cookies reset and also why you had to re-login.

This is not the new generation forum - that is still to come and with it more disruption I'm afraid.

I don't see why the update should affect forum emails, though.

EDIT: Sorry, they have just come through.
Emails from the forum can form batches to optimise server load and this might delay them until the batch is large enough to be processed.

The main thing is that you should receive them eventually

Re: Advanced notice - 10 minutes of down time on Wednesday morning at 8AM BST

All seems to be working fine here Ian; I too had to log in again but that used to happen at random (infrequent) intervals before. "All new posts" returned a total of 159 which is a lot more than usual but there was a note after 25 or so saying subsequent posts have not been updated since my last visit, to be expected. Thanks for all your hard work on our behalf .

Edit: e-mails are working as well.

Ian - Just come across an oddie - tried to add a 'face' on a couple of posts using the Go Advanced Button, but clicking on any of them didn't work. (As in frown).

Re: Advanced notice - 10 minutes of down time on Wednesday morning at 8AM BST

You need to ensure the cursor/caret is placed in the edit box where you want the emoticon to be and then it will be inserted as a sequence of characters. You can't see the graphic unless you use the Switch Editor Mode toggle (little A and big A at the top right of the edit box) or, as already pointed out, if you preview. The mode toggle is really a kind of preview but you can switch between text only and graphics view.

Re: Advanced notice - 10 minutes of down time on Wednesday morning at 8AM BST

I made a couple of posts late last night and they were included in the threads as usual. However, when I looked this morning there is no sign of them. It is no big deal as they were not at all important but it is odd and I wonder if it happened to anybody else?
