Have you found your point of departure?

Have you found yours yet, I'm still struggling (if you don't know what it means do a search on Dorothea Lange / Ralph Gibson).

Edit: Can a mod please amend the spelling error in the title.

Re: Have you found you're point of departure?

Sad to say I had to Google it Steve. For me the answer is no but hopefully I'll enjoy looking Thanks for the question though as I enjoyed reading about Ralph Gibson and Dorothea Lange.

I've studied Ralph Gibson's work quite extensively, he has a particular style you can spot without reading the sub-title. I don't know how much you've read, but his technique is to expose for the highlights making the blacks and dark shadows turn into shapes devoid of detail. Partly because of this, he has the knack of turning the mundane into fine art - a subtractive process.
Now the problem for us mere mortals: how do we find our own Point of Departute when everything under the sun has already been captured and displayed. I think Dorothea Lange set a challenge to all photographers when she uttered those words.

€8000 for what? If you're talking about the limited edition M246 I think you'll find you'll be paying way more that the original asking price - only 50 made bearing RG's signature. I suspect no one would sell for less than €50,000, maybe more, basically they're collectors items and very nice too.

Just think how good you need to be for a camera manufacturer to approach you to ask what would you like to see on a camera, and then make it for you. RG went over to the dark side in 2014 when he was convinced in his own mind that a digital monochrome could approach the aesthetics of B&W film.

Re: Have you found you're point of departure?

Looked up these two and was stuck by this from RG, " “Take your camera everywhere with you, even when you go to the drugstore to buy a toothpaste. If you have your camera in tow, chances are that you might come across a striking frame. But, if you just stand at the corner of a street and wait for something to happen, you will never get a picture.”

Another commentator I know of says 'wear your camera' - good advice.
