Geotagging photos
It would be useful to geotag my photos, especially when I'm only carrying my smart phone. If I subsequently decide the 'phone photo has merit it would be useful to be able to plan a later photo shoot after consulting weather forecasts, sun positioning data etc and to be able to return to the exact spot from where the 'phone photo was taken, particularly when I have been exploring in a previously unknown area.
My 'phone doesn't have GPS and the best I can do at present is to use the signal triangulation location service. However if this also records my track it quickly consumes the 'phone battery, so I'm looking for a self-contained compact GPS logger that can be used to record my track as well as geotag my photos accurately. I've looked at the Canmore GT-730FL-S GPS data logger but have read varying reviews. Does anyone here have experience of this GPS logger or can recommend an alternative? ![]() |

Re: Geotagging photos
Just to throw it in there....
I haven’t checked the prices and obviously don’t know your contract detail, but a phone with gps and the Olympus apps installed MAY be a cheaper route - there again it may not be what you’re after!

Re: Geotagging photos
I did give that some thought but use a PaYG system, so have to buy the phone outright. Also having GPS on all the time would kill the battery which means carrying a USB battery back up - so I might as well carry a separate GPS logger and keep the phone for it's primary purpose.
Thanks for the suggestion ![]() |

Re: Geotagging photos
Before using a smart phone, I used a basic Garmin Etrex, which is still available for about £75. It is possible to load maps covering local areas but the memory is limited. I also use a Garmin GLO to provide GPS data to my laptop PC.

Re: Geotagging photos
Fwiw using OITrack on a 3 year old iPhone I get about 8-9 hours before I get close to running out if juice. Using other apps and the mobile connection too which the battery app says uses the most power during the day.
A second hand phone with a large battery might be a cost effective option. The OItrack app obviously works well with the WiFi enabled Olympus cameras.

I used an old iPhone as a sat nav in my car as it integrates with the car stereo. No SIM using NavMii in France and it worked great. If you don't have a SIM in it then it won't hammer the battery but if you want a standalone device then that's all good. I was just suggesting an option that might be interesting.

Re: Geotagging photos
Never had one - I have had an E-PL5 which had smartphone connections using a Toshiba FlashAir card - that doesn't work either.
I wasn't really thinking about the older cameras but it is obviously worth checking compatibility before you fork out lots of money.

Re: Geotagging photos
You can get a decent Android phone with good battery life for £80 upwards these days..... I've bought a couple recently for my daughters and have been shocked at how good they are for the money..... the second one (£65!) has a 6" screen, dual SIM slots etc, etc. She's never off it and it goes all day without a charge....

Re: Geotagging photos
To expand on my above comment regarding my E-P5:
It's WiFi enabled and and I can wirelessly transfer images without any problems ,using the Olympus Oishare app om my android phone. I've wrestled with the Oitrack app and had no sign of it working. The OiShare app IMHO is one of the clunkiest and non-intuitive apps know to man/woman! The Oitrack app/addon simply doesn't work on many wireless enabled Olympus models. Jim |

Re: Geotagging photos
Sorry to hear that Jim.
I can only say that it works fine with my e-m10 mki and mkii and iphone6 which is no consolation I appreciate. Iirc from your thread you were on Android which may be the reason - though it should work properly in either platform. I did prefer the earlier implementation as part of OIShare rather than the separate app.
