    Re: The vote.

I'm not so sure I like that idea, I think that we already suffer too much influence from the American way of life and reunification would only speed up the process. This commentator has identified numerous aspects of British society that are superior to America and I cannot understand why we constantly feel compelled to emulate the US.

This was just one reason for posting this. We tend to put ourselves down when all along there are others who can see the better aspects of what Britain still has to offer. We may no longer be the 'super power' we once wre, but there are many out there who still try to emulate what we have.

Nothing in life is perfect which is a good thing as it makes us try harder to improve 'our lot.' Read into that what you will?
It's not what inspires us that is important, it's where the journey takes us.

        Re: The vote.

I notice in today's news that the proposals for England and a possible answer to the West Lothian Question are rising to the surface. Quite rightly. My advice is, like the 'pledge' signed for Scotland in the event of a No vote, get it in writing.
I like the idea of devolution for England. Anything to get powers away from Westminster. Many other countries find ways of doing it, these islands should do to.
        Awfy serious.
I don't think Nicola Sturgeon looks like Fiona from Shrek but Big Eck does look a bit like Shrek.
Ms Sturgeon already has a family and duznae need ony mair weans. She is also known as 'the Nippy Sweetie' in Scotland and is likely to be Big Eck's successor.

I'm no fan of either, but from my time in Scotland Nikkie the Biccie does speak more sense than Salmond the Panda. Not difficult, though.

If Scotland does vote to become independent, I hope the remaining part of the union walks away, and no turning back, no bail out, leave them to it.
I really do hope Scotland remains part of the UK, the synergy of the union is greater than the sum of the parts.

                Re: The vote.

So far I've kept out of the political argument, as I see plus and minus points on both sides.

However, it would be a sad day for Great Britain if Scotland devolved.

It would be a sad day for the English Regions (and Wales, and NI) if Scotland remained part of the Union and gained even further financial benefits at the expense of the English regions (ie, outside London-shire) who don't have, and probably never will have, their own Assembly.

Going back to this. perhaps the name of the new state should be 'Little Britain'.
But as a Jock I couldn't possibly suggest this.

Surely if it is a Scottish person using that term it isn't racist, but merely the Scottish claiming back that word for their own?

Well Ralph, I don't know about that - a "racist word" is a racist word in derogatory terms ... like Paddy and Taffy ... they can be construed as "racist" and I dare not use them, anywhere

If our Dear Duncan, wants to use Jock and he is a Jock - he is using it generally ... so maybe ok or maybe not

                                Re: The vote.

A lot of adjectives that are deemed to be racist are not actually racist at all, merely a reflection of the British penchant for humour and gentle lampooning of the many diverse minorities that constitute our rich multicultural heritage. Calling a Scotsman "Jock," an Irishman "Paddy" or a Welshman "Taffy" is not racist, just mischievious stereotyping, unless the context in which it is used is vindictive or hateful towards the person it is addressed purely on account of their ethnicity.

Real racism is when someone, purely on account of their accent or colour of their skin, is refused a job, credit facilities, entry to an establishment open to the public, membership of a club, or overlooked for promotion at work, or wrongly assumed to be guilty of a crime or not having a crime against them properly investigated, or bullied or assulted - the list goes on. That is the kind of racism we should not tolerate, not a humourous comment on "Top Gear" about a bridge the team had just built in Asia having "a slope on it."

The PC brigade often do the real fight against racism an injustice by trivialising it with ridiculous attempts to modify the English language.
