  • Bittern came too close

Don't you just hate it when you've got a prime lens on and you need a zoom .....

That's an excellent shot, well done.

I've been visiting Minsmere for circa ten years and have never got that close a shot of a Bittern.

on the other hand, sometimes too close is better than "where is it"

      Nice detail and colour

I agree. Shame, but another day you may get the chance to get the nether regions and legs and do a pano stitch.

I bet you were cursing at the time, shooing it away.

Why didn't you take the lower part and stitch them?

            Or take a vertical portrait.
It's the image that's important, not the tools used to make it.

Better still if the focal length was wide enough. Do we know how long its legs are?

An excellent shot Andy. There is something of a history of 'showy' Bitterns at Island Mere. This one is from my gallery here and was taken from the old Island Mere hide in 2010. One day there were four of them stalking about in front of the hide at the same time. Yours is much better quality than my effort though.

How on earth do you get the **** things to get so close? Are you good at 'booming'?

They are strange birds though. I love the great big feet! That's a cracking shot Andy.
