Interesting Ross, thanks. Your photos make it look quite small and quiet. And the train in the second one looks like one of our old "Intercity 125"s - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/InterCity_125 . They were introduced about 40 years ago and are still soldiering on in some areas.

And look what I just found linked from that wiki page: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_South_Wales_XPT

The top photo looks as if it was taken from the same spot!

        John

The IC125 still forms the backbone of many long distance rail services in the UK, and is likely to continue for at least another ten years. They are used almost exclusively on GWR and make up about 30% of the passenger traffic on the East Coast Main Line. Lines north of Edinburgh are not electrified to my knowledge so these are worked by the IC125.

It is only the electrification of main lines that has led to the gradual replacement with the (very similar) Class 91 hauled Mk4 coaching stock.

The Australian XPT is very similar to the IC125. Locomotives in the UK have been re-engined with the cleaner and more powerful V16 MTU diesel engines but I don't know whether the Australian XPT retains the original (wonderful sounding) V12 Paxman Valenta engines.

Anyhow, I think it's time I took my anorak off.

Thanks John. It only makes it look small but there is much more to it than seen here, plus it is a quiet part of the day, relatively speaking. The InterCity trains you have are our Country Link trains here travelling to outer country areas like Broken Hill & interstate etc. & is sitting in the extra long platforms (1, 2 & 3) as show in Google Maps below.

Here are a couple more photos from within the Country Platforms area.

Ahead & to the right (past further Country Platforms) is the way to the Suburban Platforms.

And this is the Google Maps view showing 15 country platform lines & 8 suburban platform lines which continue on into the City Circle & north over the Harbour Bridge.

Re: Sydney #7 - Central Station

Only now are we realising what wonderful buildings our railway stations are.

For as long as I can remember stations like Kings Cross and St Pancras were dismal places that passengers spent as little time in as possible, but in recent years we have been able to see and appreciate their wonderful architecture, and they have become fashionable once again.
