  • How's Your Aircraft Recognition?

The first stop on my recent tour of the outback was the Temora Aviation Museum, NSW.
The XZ-2's fast F1.8 lens allowed shooting by ambient light. On that day southern NSW and VIC
were in the middle of a bitter cold snap that urged me not to stay overnight for the Flying Day, a decision I now regret.
    1.
    1. Tiger Moth - 2. Sabre
    2.

    3.

Gloucester Meteor? (very dangerous leaving drums of petrol lying about )

    Ryan STM S2 (this one's mine! )
    7.

    That Spitty again ...
    8.

    9.

    Rolls Royce Avon Mk 109

You missed the Canberra, Piston Provost, Vampire and your very own Wirraway and Boomerang. The Meteor is a Mk9.

I don't feel too bad now, I got the others but hadn't a clue about these two

(I was involved in developing special chemical, biological and germ-warfare proof paints in the early '60s and watched a Canberra painted in black & yellow target towing colours using the prototype system so that plane is burnt into my psyche. Why, well we got ratted the night before, the sprayer messed up the mix and had to scrape the paint of the tail fin, which turned out to be covered in a fag-packet thin aluminium skin - so of course, he went straight through it! Turned out OK as the RAF type in charge pointed out the fin was already covered in patches where others had done the same )

Some cracking and nostalgic shots Mark, thanks

                Re: How's Your Aircraft Recognition?

Surely that's a Mk 8 Meteor? and the picture of the of the photo in No.7 is a Ryan STM-S2 (sole survivor). A primary trainer used by the U.S. Air Force in W.W. 2.

Thanks for that interesting sidelight of your career in aviation, Brian. These old warbirds evoke nostalgic memories for all of us who grew up during WWII years.

I can only say for sure that it's a Meteor, but wouldn't know the Mk. Keith.

As it's on your doorstep, 'Chevvyf1', have you visited 'Solent Skies'? It's a great historic aircraft museum.

                              Don't make it a "maybe".

They've got some unique aircraft - a Supermarine SE6, a Sunderland converted to a luxury passenger flying boat and the unique Saunders-Roe SR.A/1 - a flying boat jet fighter ('Wet Jet) built in the 40s:
