I suspect it is digital photography that has made the need for this function obsolete.

Using a digital camera it is quicker and easier just to fire off half a dozen shots using slightly different exposures. (In any case, Photoshop provides some latitude in exposure.)

Anyone who really wants to take multiple spot meter readings can use a hand-held exposure meter, (or average spot meter readings from a digital camera). I agree this is not as easy as the OM3/OM4 system, but I cannot remember the last time that I needed to do this.
