I remove my cards all the time and I've never had a MkI or MkII lockup.

That said, you'd be more likely to get contact problems through never removing the card. The act of inserting/removing the card causes a cleaning action. Without that, crud can build up over time causing connection problems.

Used to happen in PCs all the time - you'd go around reseating all the memory and expansion cards as the first step in diagnosing a problem and that solved the issue more often than not.
