Go for it. You are not wasting your time.

Don't believe all you read.

Definitely use a tripod.
F/1.8 is fine
Iso 800 is ok or higher say 1600/ 3200.

Great tutorial here that blows lots of the pre conceived ideas/rules (myths), applies to M4/3 as much as FF.
