Chris, yes it's a pain in the neck, but try and look on the bright side.
You were happy to pay the price offered for a working lens with little more than cover by the sale of goods act etc.
Since these things are quite hard to come by, I would personally be pressing for Cash Converters to have the lens repaired, at their expense, by Olympus and then returned to you.
It will take a while to fix, as I think it will need to go to Japan rather than Portugal like my 300mm did when it was behaving oddly.
When it comes back you will have a fully serviced and calibrated lens with an Olympus warranty.
