Re: Old Bike in a River

I'll just point out that this is a 1s exposure hand-held at 100mm (200mm effective focal length in 35mm terms). I find that quite astonishing. I took about 8 shots of the same scene and all but 1...

Re: New lenses coming

I have a similar set of primes Hew but I must say that the look of images from the 25/1.2 do seem a little special. Sometimes I think I might just sell the 12, 17, 25 and my Sigma 30/1.4 and replace...

Re: New lenses coming

A quick Google reveals that the GX9 might be launched next month. That's believable. I expect the same 20Mp sensor in a similar body but with the IBIS and shutter from the GX89/85. Maybe a few of the...

Re: New lenses coming

I've not heard that rumour David. I wonder what they have in mind. For me it would be something with a serious step up in sensor performance:

- BSI for improved higher ISO performance
- Lower...

Re: F stops

OK - I'll adopt my teacher stance and try!

The key thing to do is not to confuse f-stop and f-number.

The f-number of a lens is the inverse ratio of aperture diameter to focal length. That...

Re: Digitial vs Film - a real-world comparison

I don't think that contrast is equivalent to DR is it? Contrast is the range of tones available, whereas DR is how bright/dark the extremes are. However, I can see that the ability to discriminate...

Re: New lenses coming

I took a look at the samples gallery for the 25/1.2 on mu43.com and I must say it does have a very nice in-focus to out-of-focus transition. I Ike the images it produces.

Re: New lenses coming

F2.8 to f1.2 is 2.5 stops isn't it?

Re: Digitial vs Film - a real-world comparison

Steve - I'm a bit confused. I get that film can capture a wider DR - but that's because it's compressing the DR for later output isn't it?

To determine the DR at scanning time, I suppose what we...

Lovely composition and tones Keith - but I'm craving those autumn colours!

Re: New lenses coming

Well, last time I looked the 12-40 didn't offer f1.2 ! That's the only reason why you'd want to buy them ;) I don't really need them, but I find the 17/1.8 my most used lens and it would be nice to...

Re: Digitial vs Film - a real-world comparison

Yes, I'm a bit confused as to why DR is an issue for neg scanning. It only needs to be as good as the output medium - which for either print or screen will be less than even our puny m43 sensors can...

Re: Olympus 7-14 f2.8

Rocks, old logs, grass, anything will do for foreground interest. Here are a few examples of mine:

Re: Olympus 7-14 f2.8

I personally have both 10-stop and 8-stop filters and hardly ever use the 8. Big-stop NDs are all about getting long exposures in daylight and even at ISO 200 you need all the attenuation you can...

Re: Digitial vs Film - a real-world comparison

Steve - just read some of those articles on emulsion.org. Interesting. The articles by Tom Rayfield where he goes through various B&W films and developers to find the "best" are interesting. ...

Re: Digitial vs Film - a real-world comparison

Steve - I agree that the guy's analysis is somewhat lacking in technical correctness - especially the comments on DR, which are just wrong. However, I did appreciate the images he provided which I...

Digitial vs Film - a real-world comparison

I thought this was an interesting piece, complete with a set of digital vs film examples. I can certainly tell the difference between the two, but I can't say that I prefer one or the other. ...

Well... I could start a long post here, but I think the big points are:

- Peace and harmony within a continent historically riven by war
- The power of inclusion vs isolationism
- Stronger...

Re: As a certain arty-farty might say…

That's a fascinating story Wally - thanks for posting it. As much as I love railways I'm not sure spending €200m is money well spent. Mind you, €200m, at about 1/200 of the cost of HS2 sounds like...
