Re: v3 Firmware for mk2 - updates for mk2, m1x and lenses

OK, I'll accept that FGPAs are firmware then - if you'll accept that software (von Neuman style) in ROM is also firmware :). I accept that they go about it in different ways, but both are about...

Re: v3 Firmware for mk2 - updates for mk2, m1x and lenses

Hmmm - I think we could have a debate about that...

From Mirriam Webster dictionary:

I wouldn't call FPGAs firmware - or if I did I'd say it's very low-level firmware.

I find constant muttering to myself helps too!

Re: Honestly, do you like autofocus?

It's not annoying since it tells me that the focus acquisition has worked. In any case, I use the small focus point so it's hardly distracting.

Re: v3 Firmware for mk2 - updates for mk2, m1x and lenses

Battery life is very little to do with the number of shots taken. It's primarily driven by how long the camera is turned on. I've shots thousands on some occasions and low hundreds on others.

Re: v3 Firmware for mk2 - updates for mk2, m1x and lenses

Yes, the update sets f5.6 (A & M) and 1/250 sec (S & M) into any custom settings you've got. This was a bug that was fixed some time ago - we've regressed! Minor point though, so I'm not bitching...

Re: Honestly, do you like autofocus?

AF on modern cameras is extremely good. Why would I not use it? The beeping is annoying though - it's one of the first things I turn off whenever I pickup a new camera.

MF is good if you want...

Re: v3 Firmware for mk2 - updates for mk2, m1x and lenses

Just updated mine. I see we're back to forcing f5.6 onto any custom modes that are assigned! Slightly annoying.

Re: v3 Firmware for mk2 - updates for mk2, m1x and lenses

I'm guessing that it's just some additional JPEG processing. I'd be amazed if raw noise is any different (unless they're doing a Fuji-esque non-defeatable NR in raw files - which I sincerely hope...

Re: v3 Firmware for mk2 - updates for mk2, m1x and lenses

It's the same - just that firmware is software installed in a EEPROM (or similar).

Re: v3 Firmware for mk2 - updates for mk2, m1x and lenses

I guess you can't upgrade the firmware in a 35mm film camera. You should try one of these new fangled things though Steve - it can be fun sometimes ;)

Re: Is it only the British ?

No, it's not only the British - the Japanese are worse. This is an amusing excerpt from the Nixon/Sato talks in 1969:

Re: 10 Hour Working Week

We bought a kettle for the branch office we have in Huntingdon. About 30 avid tea and coffee drinkers - probably on the boil for 4 hours solid per day. Went to Argos who offered us a 5 year...

Re: v3 Firmware for mk2 - updates for mk2, m1x and lenses

There doesn't seem to be any firmware at that link - just some PDF blurb about the camera.

Re: Buttons..What do you do with them?

That's a personal opinion though Steve. I'm quite familiar with the old style camera controls, but find the dual dial-on-the-topplate approach of modern digital cameras much faster and more...

Re: Buttons..What do you do with them?

Film is for covering food in the fridge. Camera design went bananas when roll film was introduced. Why don't we dispense with all this flexible film nonsense and the silly little camera boxes that...

Re: Buttons..What do you do with them?

From memory...

- Back-button - back-button focus (!)
- Lever around back button - switch between CAF and SAF
- Video button - enable exposure/HDR bracket (set to 5-shot, 5-stop bracket)
-...

Re: Updated Olympus lens "roadmap"

Very odd. Overlaps aplenty in the "Pro" space (esp zooms), but nothing to upgrade/replace the lower cost lenses. The 12/2, 17/1.8, 9-18, 12-50 etc could really do with a refresh.

Re: 40-150 Pro vs. 50-200 SWD

Worst characteristic of the 40-150 IMHO is the harsh OOF blur. For portraits, I think that would matter.

Re: 40-150 Pro vs. 50-200 SWD

Contrast is slightly higher in the 40-150, but otherwise at this size it's hard to make a call on resolution. The other potential negative of the 40-150 - overly busy OOF blur - isn't evidenced on...
