My favourite lens for them is the scope on the BSA.

Re: My selection of lenses for everything?

I have the 100-400 and the 300/4+1.4. I use the former for safaris where animals vary in size and range; and the latter for birds which are usually small and distant.

Re: Printer ink

I've used compatible inks on an Epson WF 2630 without problems. The software does detect they are not OEM but allows use anyway.

Re: My selection of lenses for everything?

Unless you're a wide angle fan, and assuming sufficient depth of pocket, you can do pretty much everything you want with the Oly 12-100 and the Panny 100-400.

Re: Water Buck at sunset

We used to kit all our cars with the five battery Maglite. In the UK they seem to be regarded as an offensive weapon but in Nairobi they were definitely defensive.

In the days when life was...

Re: Cannon firing at Fort Lytton (Image Heavy)

There's a well preserved battery of 24pdr canon on iron carriages dating from c1805 at Fort St James which guards the entrance to St John's Antigua.

Re: Water Buck at sunset

That's a most appalling experience. There's not much you can do about wildfires but to have the bandits coming in as well .... but that's Africa.

I never lived in Karen but used to visit...

Re: Cannon firing at Fort Lytton (Image Heavy)

It's nice to see all this historic artillery in such good nick. One of the best places to see old guns in their original batteries is Gibraltar.

Re: Water Buck at sunset

I'm sorry to hear about the fire. It must have been a devastating experience.

Convenience wins! The Kenya safaris were either from ships visiting Mombasa or when I had a small fiefdom in...

Re: Water Buck at sunset

Between 1966 and 1991 I was fortunate to be able to visit Tsavo East and West, Amboseli and the Mara as well as smaller parks including Nairobi, Hell's Gate, Naivasha, Nakuru and the Rift as far...

Re: Water Buck at sunset

When I see photos like this I can feel a safari coming on again! It's 27 years since we last visited Tsavo but I expect our next will be a return to the Kruger.

Re: Travel zoom

It depends on the quality of print you want. Compact zooms like the 14-42 or 11x zooms like the 14-150 will not give you the same IQ as the 12-40 or any other pro lens. You're trading IQ for...

Re: Travel zoom

If the 12-40 is the focal length you need then the lightest equivalent is the 14-42EZ. My 'serious' walkabout is now the EM1 + 12-100 but it's big by MFT standards. When size and weight are an...

Re: Decided to go long - but what to choose?

I have the 100-400 and the 300+MC14.

The 100-400 is excellent on safari where animals can vary hugely in size and distance. Occasionally even 100 can be too long so I have a second body with...

Re: Communal Bird Photography Thread

If ever there was a bird designed by a committee it must be the Secretary Bird. Some years ago I got a shot of one in Umfolozi where it was eating a small snake.

Re: 90-250/2.8 is it worth getting?

It's a stunning lens both in performance and weight. You need a Sherpa or a wheel barrow which is why I sold mine!

Re: Decided to go long - but what to choose?

I have the 300 and the 100-400 but it is the latter which gets the most use. TBH if it had been available earlier than the 300 I wouldn't have bought the 300.

Re: Macro lens recommendations

The FT Sigma 150/2.8 macro is also an excellent lens if you want a long working distance. It's now the only FT lens I have since switching to MFT.

Re: which camrea?

The E3 is certainly weather proofed but I don't think the E30 is. That may affect your decision.

Re: 150mm f/2 at LCE

In my E5 days I had one of those and the 35-100. They are stunning lenses but heavy compared to MFT. Apart from composition I seldom got a duff shot even in difficult lighting conditions.

I now...
