Re: Wartime Bridgend

You have a lovely collection of images there. The quality is perhaps a little too good for the era, but one or two details aside, such as the 21st century radio microphone, they really could have...

Re: Honestly, do you like autofocus?

Thank you Stephen; that was my thought too although I realise now that I have some work to do on the image. I particularly like the bright green moss on the seat which is diminished by filtering out...

Re: Automatic “subscription”

Many outfits require a card number before allowing a 'free' trial. Their hope is that you forget to cancel, or that inertia prevents you from doing so, so you are tied in to some form of Contract....

Re: Automatic “subscription”

I had a similar problem with an accounting software company based in Newcastle which auto-renewed my annual support and upgrade package without my knowledge. That would be bad enough but the cost...

Re: Honestly, do you like autofocus?

What puzzles me is that I used the same image in the Nostalgia Nexus thread a few weeks back and nobody mentioned anything about it being blue. Somebody did mention that it had a 'cross processed...

Re: Honestly, do you like autofocus?

I will have a play with filters in Photoshop later, but if it really is 'awash with blue' there is something more fundamental wrong.

Re: Honestly, do you like autofocus?

Ouch! :)

Thank you for your constructive comments Richard. As you know Velvia 50 tends to produce highly saturated colours so it is likely to exacerbate the effects of unusual lighting...

Re: Honestly, do you like autofocus?

Both were scanned from Velvia 50. The lighting for the second image was slightly odd (late afternoon in late autumn) but it looks fine to me on my computer screen and iPad.

On critical...

Re: Is it only the British ?

Well to quote a regular example: Wife says "I don't mind if you go for a drink after choir / go out taking photographs / go or do whatever" (delete as appropriate).

Then when I come home late and...

Re: Honestly, do you like autofocus?

Excuse me, but there is nothing fuzzy or grainy about my snaps!

We are talking about modern aids, bleeps and flashing lights getting in the way of composition, which I agree is an issue.

For...

Re: Honestly, do you like autofocus?

I don't particularly like auto focus but it does come in handy sometimes. I much prefer to focus manually and I usually do a better job than the camera because I know what I want to focus on.

I...

Re: Is it only the British ?

Have you ever noticed that wives often say the exact opposite to what they really mean; just to test us or to give us enough rope...... *yes

That seems to be a world-wide phenomenon too. ;)

Re: 10 Hour Working Week

I have had a few watch batteries from Timpson's too. They wanted to sell me the lifetime guarantee about twenty years ago so I have had my money's worth. :)

Re: 10 Hour Working Week

I always make 'tea on the boil' and 'coffee just off the boil'. I also like to avoid boiling the water to death when making tea as it spoils the taste, so the fancy kettle makes it easy to set the...

Re: 10 Hour Working Week

On the subject of shorter working weeks, disposable income and all that, we made the mistake of wandering into John Lewis on Saturday in search of a new electric kettle to replace our Kenwood which...

Re: 10 Hour Working Week

I agree with that. You really couldn't make it up. But a Corbyn led government could be even worse if that is possible. :(

At least we do still have a defence industry I suppose.

Well yes;...

Re: 10 Hour Working Week

"The problem with socialism is that you eventually run out of other people's money."

We have seen that happen many times in the past, but I fear a Corbyn government could take that concept to a...

Re: 10 Hour Working Week

I agree 100% with your analysis Paul. The concept of working just ten hours a week is perhaps rather too extreme, and would only really apply to manufacturing industry, but the point is well made...

Re: The Farne Islands

With an 'Auld Gits Railcard' on Wednesday you could travel King's Cross to Durham for £23.55, or £54.45 First Class with breakfast included.

Returning the same day it would be £13.85 Standard...

Re: 10 Hour Working Week

More recently we had a period of several days when all flights were grounded after the 911 attacks. It was said that average temperatures dropped by about three degrees over the period. However, a...

Re: 10 Hour Working Week

We are told that our food, and especially meat production is a major contributor to global warming.

I must admit I am not overly keen on embracing a totally veggie diet but I can see why reducing...
