DIY Kruger safari pix 2

DAY 3

This yielded some interesting encounters, but no photos, with jackal and lion on our pre breakfast drive and also the rear view of a rhino legging it away from the vehicle. Apparently the...

Re: DIY Kruger Safari - the kit

I agree. The northern part of the Kruger lies in the tropics (Capricorn is just north of Mopani rest camp) so one doesn't get the long mornings and evenings to which we are accustomed in our own...

DIY Kruger safari pix 1

Forum members who have been on safari will know how addictive it can be. Itís more than just a matter of looking at the animals. The Kruger is about 380km long and averages 60km wide. It covers...

Re: DIY Kruger safari - admin

There's not much hassle in the Kruger because what we do is what the South Africans do. Book flight, book car, book accommodation, rock up at camp restaurant.

Re: DIY Kruger safari - admin

I don't think The Wife would approve of Lara being in the car with us!

Our visits have been in September, November and February/March. September is always dry because it's the end of winter but...

DIY Kruger Safari - the kit

Africa is dusty and the dust penetrates everything. It can also be very wet. Both these issues point towards a pro body with a pro lens. Consumer grade kit will do but you will need to be very...

Re: More from Botswana

Some lovely photos there! We're off next month for a ten day DIY safari in the Kruger. There's been plenty of rain so some of the animals and birds will be difficult to see amongst the vegetation.

Re: Lens recommendation

You might wish to consider FT macro lenses which you can use with an MMF converter. The Sigma 105 is good but the Sigma 150/2.8 is the bee's knees if you want a longer working distance than the...

Re: Lens hoods and polarising filters

That was a good feature of the 50-200 and you'd think they'd do something similar for other lenses.

Re: Flying Pig

The likelihood is that the bite occurred in Bucks but we were walking an area we've walked for thirty years and never seen a snake. A less likely explanation is that it happened a day earlier in...

Re: Flying Pig

Part of the problem with my dog was that he was not seen to be bitten and I've no idea where or when it happened as we'd not been in snake prone areas. A bite was an unlikely option in late November...

Re: Flying Pig

I'm sorry to hear about the dog and the snake. My youngest Labrador was bitten by an adder (very much less venomous than most of yours) in the last week in November. The vet's bill was horrendous...

Re: Oly 12-40 vs 12-100 size and weight.

You can't really make a fair comparison between the 12-40 and the 12-100 because they cover different focal lengths, have different maximum apertures and are suited to different purposes.

To get...

Re: Oly 12-40 vs 12-100 size and weight.

Since I bought the 12-100 my 12-40 and 35-100/2.8 have been gathering dust. The 12-100 is large and heavy by MFT standards but overall more versatile.

Re: Panasonic or Olympus on MFT

The 14-150 is undoubtedly convenient but I found the IQ to be well below what I wanted, so sold it. Two lenses to cover the range will give better results.

Re: From E-510 to OM-D E-M5

I bought a lens from HDEW and they were very quick to honour their own guarantee when a problem arose. I would be happy to use them again.

Re: From E-510 to OM-D E-M5

It's always worth looking to see what the major retailers such as SRS, Ffordes, Park, Wex etc have for sale as you then get a guarantee.

For example Ffordes have a new 40-150 for £279. They have...

Re: From E-510 to OM-D E-M5

It sounds as though you may have the 14-45EZ lens which will certainly be better than your 17.5-45 lens and considerably smaller and more convenient. If I recollect correctly the only other FT lens...
