Re: Hello from East Sussex

Welcome. Nothing to fear in micro for thirds. Buy on old EM5 and give it a try. They can be found at very reasonable prices.

Re: Hi from sunny Bedfordshire

Welcome!

Tips for the Pen-F (and most Olympus M43 cameras):

- Upgrade to firmware 2.1. There were stability issues on some cameras with earlier releases. Latest is 3.1. 3.0 introduced some...

Re: Back in business

The Pen F uses the same batteries as the EM5. The other Pens use a different one that is the same as in the EM10.

Re: v3 Firmware for mk2 - updates for mk2, m1x and lenses

Paul - have you got before/after upgrade shots to prove this? I'm somewhat sceptical TBH. Someone over on mu43 said he shot ISO 6400 raw images of the inside of his airing cupboard (!) both before...

Re: Raw not recognised in LR 6

Are you running on Apple or Windows? I seem to recall that Apple introduced a raw file interpreter into the OS at some point. If Adobe switched to using that rather than their own then maybe that...

Re: v3 Firmware for mk2 - updates for mk2, m1x and lenses

Steve - words mean what most people agree them to mean. There's no prizes for sticking to a definition that no-one else shares. Every single reference I can find on the internet defines firmware as...

Re: Honestly, do you like autofocus?

I agree - I still fail to see the value proposition of Leica. Maybe there's a lifetime repair angle, but from a price/features/results perspective it doesn't make sense at all.

Re: Buttons..What do you do with them?

I challenge anyone to evaluate DOF properly on any camera of any type (RF, SLR, DSLR, MILC) by peering at a viewfinder that is much smaller than any final print or screen. Guessing DOF from the...

Re: v3 Firmware for mk2 - updates for mk2, m1x and lenses

500 lines without bugs - dream on. I'd put it at fewer than 50 lines. Maybe 5 for the incompetents. But so what? Software dev is about an engineering practice that extends beyond coding. It's...

Re: v3 Firmware for mk2 - updates for mk2, m1x and lenses

OK, I'll accept that FGPAs are firmware then - if you'll accept that software (von Neuman style) in ROM is also firmware :). I accept that they go about it in different ways, but both are about...

Re: v3 Firmware for mk2 - updates for mk2, m1x and lenses

Hmmm - I think we could have a debate about that...

From Mirriam Webster dictionary:

I wouldn't call FPGAs firmware - or if I did I'd say it's very low-level firmware.

Re: Honestly, do you like autofocus?

It's not annoying since it tells me that the focus acquisition has worked. In any case, I use the small focus point so it's hardly distracting.

Re: v3 Firmware for mk2 - updates for mk2, m1x and lenses

Battery life is very little to do with the number of shots taken. It's primarily driven by how long the camera is turned on. I've shots thousands on some occasions and low hundreds on others.

Re: v3 Firmware for mk2 - updates for mk2, m1x and lenses

Yes, the update sets f5.6 (A & M) and 1/250 sec (S & M) into any custom settings you've got. This was a bug that was fixed some time ago - we've regressed! Minor point though, so I'm not bitching...

Re: Honestly, do you like autofocus?

AF on modern cameras is extremely good. Why would I not use it? The beeping is annoying though - it's one of the first things I turn off whenever I pickup a new camera.

MF is good if you want...

Re: v3 Firmware for mk2 - updates for mk2, m1x and lenses

Just updated mine. I see we're back to forcing f5.6 onto any custom modes that are assigned! Slightly annoying.

Re: v3 Firmware for mk2 - updates for mk2, m1x and lenses

I'm guessing that it's just some additional JPEG processing. I'd be amazed if raw noise is any different (unless they're doing a Fuji-esque non-defeatable NR in raw files - which I sincerely hope...

Re: v3 Firmware for mk2 - updates for mk2, m1x and lenses

It's the same - just that firmware is software installed in a EEPROM (or similar).

Re: v3 Firmware for mk2 - updates for mk2, m1x and lenses

I guess you can't upgrade the firmware in a 35mm film camera. You should try one of these new fangled things though Steve - it can be fun sometimes ;)
