I see it runs on batteries too. I bet that would cost!

Re: The Future of Cars

Yes indeed, but of course wages were very much lower then, so perhaps the politicians thought it was better pay men (and it was mainly men) for doing something worthwhile rather than claiming...

Re: The Future of Cars

Thinking back to the 1960's and 1970's these 'promises' may well have been well meant. Gas and electricity were still state owned and it really didn't matter whether they made a profit or not. From...

Re: Vintage Kit

I don't know about the current JLR models but the clock in my 2015 XF does not update itself, and there is no option for it to do so. JLR's explanation is that many of their vehicles regularly travel...

Re: Vintage Kit

I had the same problem at about the same age.

When I started work I spent most of my first month's pay on a second-hand Philips GA212 Electronic which I still have, and which still works...

Re: Vintage Kit

Garrard's 'Transcription' decks such as the 301 and 401 were of very high quality, and were standard equipment in BBC studios and suchlike, but their consumer decks such as the SP25 were crap.

I...

Re: Vintage Kit

Most car clocks now should be synchronised with RDS data, but as our daughter has found, this only works if you tune in to main BBC radio stations once in a while. ;)

Re: Vintage Kit

Interesting question. Most of the big names in high-end audio such as Mission, Quad, Wharfedale, Audiolab and Castle Acoustics were bought up and in many cases rescued by the Chinese owned IAG. Most...

Re: The Future of Cars

That is true. Nothing like the whiff of Benzine for clearing the lungs.

Then there were coal tar and carbolic soaps.

Re: The Future of Cars

Well I don't suppose we had much say in the matter.

Up until that time there had been gasworks in almost every town in the country; sometimes two or three, presumably employing large numbers of...

Re: The Future of Cars

Oh aye! I remember when North Sea Gas was going to be 'almost free' once the rigs and pipework had been paid for.

Re: Vintage Kit

Actually, I have an EMI oscilloscope, model WM8 that was built in 1959. It is quite a big and heavy beast and is all hand made with 4BA nuts, bolts and locking washers holding all of the components...

Re: Geared Steam Locomotives

There is no EXIF data but opinion seems to be that it was late 1950's. As you know the line was permanently closed in 1962, pre-Beeching.

Re: Geared Steam Locomotives

As promised, a busy scene at Stainmore Summit with a pair of Ivatt 4MT 2-6-0's waiting to depart with a westbound mineral train. The banking engine, its job complete, can just be seen at the rear.

Re: Vintage Kit

I am still using a pair of Quad II power amplifiers built back in the 1950's!

Better still, Quad service and repair them at the works in Huntingdon where they were built.

Parts are not cheap,...

Re: The Future of Cars

I totally agree about the social isolation. I work from home. I don't miss the office politics but I do miss working in a large organisation and the support that it gives. But is commuting to work...

Re: The Future of Cars

Politics is a thankless task nowadays but I wouldn't mind giving it a go. I don't know whether having an active interest in transport would qualify anyone for the post of Transport Minister though as...

Re: The Future of Cars

From my own experience public transport in the UK is ages behind most of mainland Europe where it is a way of everyday life. More importantly public transport isn't seen as a legacy from the past but...

Re: Geared Steam Locomotives

I had heard of them but have never seen one. I don't think they were ever used on main lines in the UK; more in quarries, coal mines and suchlike, and I suspect the gears would wear fairly quickly...
