Re: Is this a conspiracy?

I'm only a libertarian mate, harmless honest.:)

Maybe my first post was a bit direct. No offence was intended. Such is life these days, everyone seems to be ducking and weaving, the world is just...

Re: Odd clouds

Definitely not a lenticular cloud. It's a Fallstreak Hole, caused by a mixture of supercooled water and ice. I saw a good one above Cumbria many years ago and a smaller one since. They are quite rare.

Re: Communal Bird Photography Thread

There may be more changes to come. Currently there is the Lesser Redpoll, 3x Common Redpoll, and 2x Arctic Redpoll. However, latest research suggests they are all in fact the same species with...

Re: Electronic shutter/silent mode query.

IIRC the sensor readout speed for the EM1 is 1/13 sec. The EM1II is quoted 4x faster at 1/60.

The sensor readout speed does not affect shutter speed.

FWIW according to this guy the em1 is...

Getting a car close to the good bits of Stanage isn't easy. There is a car park at Burbage that may be worth a look. There are 2 roads from Burbage to nearby Hathersage, the one called The Dale...

Re: A question to birdwatchers

As you'll know even in binoculars the bird is usually still very small. I think in old money 50mm was considered 1x mag, so 100mm was 2x etc.. A 500mm and 600mm would be around 10x and 12x which is...

Re: A Wee Dram or Two (or Three)

Just for interest there are 96 currently operating malt whisky distilleries that have released a 3yo whisky at some point, and a further 14 operating malt distilleries (all new) that are yet to do so...

Re: Communal Dragonfly, Butterfly and Insect photo thread

Yep a common darter. The Ruddy Darter lacks the yellow side panels on the thorax and is slightly shorter and more redder. Another diagnostic is that the Ruddy has a black 'T' on top of the thorax...

Re: Communal Dragonfly, Butterfly and Insect photo thread

I think you're right Peter. Harold's suggestion is Saperda Carcharias, i think it's known as the 'large poplar borer' and is never far from poplars. Two similar species.

Re: Communal dragonfly and butterfly thread

Age related i would assume, weakened immune systems. Or just accumulated gunk they can't preen off.

It's always better to get the whole abdomen on the focus plane if possible, but not essential.

There are apparently a few hours of flight time left that could be used up before the end of October. The two recent Farewell Tour may not be 'the last flight'. I suspect if it does take to the air...

Re: comparing the 75-300mk2 with panny 35-100 on the EM-1 when shooting House Martins
