A Parable of The Millennial Son and the Wood Burning Stove

We have just returned from a very enjoyable holiday on the west coast of Scotland where we stayed in a charming old cottage equipped with a wood burning stove. The nights were chilly and logs were...

Re: Pop Up Scam?

A lot of these crop up from 'clickbait' links on Facebook and other social media sites including forums. I find magazines are the worst.

Re: Climate Change - Latest

Hmm. I would disagree with that point Dave.

You are spot on about banks and venture capitalists, but our managers have an equally short term view. Far too many people only keep their jobs on this...

Re: Pop Up Scam?

I used Sophos for a few years but switched to Kaspersky because Sophos would not scan emails at the point of download and would only intervene if a malicious attachment was executed.

Re: Pop Up Scam?

Not necessarily hacked, but there are plenty of scammers who purport to represent legitimate organisations who use such tactics to ask for your card details, etc.

I certainly wouldn't be paying...

Re: Climate Change - Latest

No; none at all. Anything that cleans up the environment, improves efficiency and reduces harmful emissions is a win-win. Only those with a death wish or a vested interest would vote against it.

Re: Climate Change - Latest

Problem is it isn't just CO2 emissions and global warming. The oceans have become more acidic affecting their ability to absorb CO2 whilst also endangering corals and other organisms that recycle...

Re: Strange 'phone calls!

Please be warned: there are hundreds of 'apps', many of them free, that allow mobile callers to display whichever Caller ID they want. This is now a very common problem. If you try to redial the...

I have heard of the 'Westminster Bubble' but how does that bubble survive with 650 pricks inside?

Re: A day in the diary of a BMW driver

I have never been so bothered about the lack of indicators as the lack of a reverse gear. I don't think I have ever seen a BMW driver reverse for anyone, ever. Their need is always greater and more...

Re: A day in the diary of a BMW driver

Back in the day it was Ford Cortina drivers, then Peugeot and VW Golf drivers before they all became BMW and Audi drivers.

I think it all boils down to which manufacturers offer the best deals...

Re: Flash advice

To be fair the FL50 is very good with batteries, (surprisingly so for Olympus), but I have a Canon flashgun for my G12 which drains a set of AA batteries in about a year.

To get around this...

Re: Flash advice

Batteries notwithstanding, please be aware that many electronic devices now use 'soft switching' rather than a physical on/off switch. This provides many benefits such as auto-off, but there will...

Re: Flash advice

Lithium cells can be very good but the Panasonic Eneloop cells (and many other NiMh cells nowadays) offer equal storage lives with very low internal resistance, so recycling times are very short.

Re: Wartime Bridgend

You have a lovely collection of images there. The quality is perhaps a little too good for the era, but one or two details aside, such as the 21st century radio microphone, they really could have...

Thank you Stephen; that was my thought too although I realise now that I have some work to do on the image. I particularly like the bright green moss on the seat which is diminished by filtering out...

Re: Automatic “subscription”

Many outfits require a card number before allowing a 'free' trial. Their hope is that you forget to cancel, or that inertia prevents you from doing so, so you are tied in to some form of Contract....

Re: Honestly, do you like autofocus?

Thank you for your constructive comments Richard. As you know Velvia 50 tends to produce highly saturated colours so it is likely to exacerbate the effects of unusual lighting...

Re: Honestly, do you like autofocus?

Both were scanned from Velvia 50. The lighting for the second image was slightly odd (late afternoon in late autumn) but it looks fine to me on my computer screen and iPad.
