Re: Oly compared favourably with Canon full frame

It appears that the current 'rush' to full-frame is driven by people who like to take their photos in the dark

The video linked in the original post shows that more pixels are irrelevant...

Re: Elements upgrade with Nik collection?

For 'stitching' I use the excellent Microsoft Image Composite Editor (ICE), which is a free download from Microsoft and integrates with file manager, for easy selection of the images to be stitched. ...

Re: Elements upgrade with Nik collection?

Why do you feel the need to 'upgrade'? Remember that PSE 11 introduced a different user interface, which you may or may not like.

I still use PSE 2 most of the time because it seems to do...

Re: Sd card failure ???

I recall that my first Canon compact (A20) came with an 8MB card. That wouldn't hold half a photo nowadays!

For holiday snapshots, I usually buy a number of smaller, cheaper cards such as...

Re: Sd card failure ???

If you use Windows, you could run Chkdsk on the card and see if there are any bad sectors. I wouldn't rely on it as a main card, if there are.

Re: Sd card failure ???

Make sure you look at both the read and write speeds. You want fast write and that's always expensive! It's not always obvious unless you look closely at the specs.

Re: A Pink Rose Bud with Stereo Using Leica 400mm

Good photo that demonstrates the near-macro capability of the Leica 100-400 at its closest focus.

I regularly use mine for butterfly photos, as it reduces the likelihood of disturbing the...

Re: Sd card failure ???

I noice that Amazon still list some UHS-II 16Gb cards but more expensive that 32Gb! You can always use a larger card but download more frequently, to guard against loss.

Re: Panasonic to announce their first Full Frame Camera

The marketing men will only look at sales figures. One problem seems to be that people expect smaller format lenses to be cheaper. For example, there were complaints about the 'high' price of the...

Re: Adobe Upcoming Changes to Creative Cloud OS Support

I'm rather Luddite when it comes to software. For me, Windows XP was the best of the line, although I am currently using Windows 7, with its many clumsily updated 'features'.

For photo...

Re: Sunrise over Bentong.

It's a beautiful shot but it looks too blue to me. I tried reducing Blue, using Photoshop Elements, then tweaked 'Levels' a little and finally added a little more Saturation.

Re: Nikon Mirrorless

There is also the fact that a huge number of excellent lenses have been designed to cover the 35mm format and their properties, in terms of angle of view, depth of field, etc., are familiar to their...

Re: Nikon Mirrorless

My first impression, from the photos, is that it's an ugly-looking thing! Only time will tell if their on-chip AF system can match the very effective tracking AF of their DSLRs, which is crucial for...

Re: Communal Night-Sky Photography Thread

Indeed:) Looking at your image again, I think it's the absence of any yellow in the surrounding stars that my brain is 'noticing'.

The image is more than just the nebula and there should be...

Re: Communal Night-Sky Photography Thread

I think you have a very striking image and am amazed by what can be achieved with relatively simple equipment.

Re: ISO & Digital Sensors

My take on the article, which I agree was not that clearly expressed, is that, traditionally, 'exposure' was based on reflectance of a grey card.

That concept works quite well with film,...

Re: Lens Acquisition Syndrome

I find it amusing that manufacturers now produce near perfect lenses so, being human, we all want to try old poorly-corrected lenses, with masses of aberrations and weird bokeh :)

Re: Arsenal....there's interesting....

Surely that' what 'iA mode' mode is supposed to do? Personally, I prefer my own judgement to that of the people who design these systems

Re: ISO & Digital Sensors

Harold, thank you for linking to the article, which I found very interesting. I use the highlights indication in the viewfinder of my E-M1 to guide my 'exposure to the right'. The important think...

Re: Olympus 45mm f 1.2 vs PanLeica 42.5mm nocticron

It is those subtle incompatibility issues that make me prefer to use Olympus lenses on Olympus bodies unless there are very strong reasons otherwise.

For example, there's no Oly equivalent to...

Re: DSLR & telephoto lens Imaging Planets how realistic?

I feel that you have been a little too discouraging - I can see the rings with either a 300 f/4 Nikon lens or a 100-400 Pan/Leica zoom on my E-M1.

No detail, I agree, but I think there's a...
