Re: Mandarin Ducks 2

As the name suggests they're not a native species but seem to do quite well in this country.

Re: Panasonic Leica D Vario Elmar 14-150 mm F3.5-5.6 lens.

I regretted selling mine when I switched to MFT as it is one of the most versatile lenses I've ever had.

DIY Kruger safari pix 6 and final

DAY 9

Oh dear, this is getting near the end of the holiday and we’re short of cat sightings, but matters were about to improve.

We took the road that follows the old Selati Railway. It’s long...

Re: Tits Nest

The Oly does look slightly better and I've always suspected that to be the case. The problem is that the Oly only does 300 and 420 whilst the Panny does everything from 100 to 400.

Re: DIY Kruger safari - admin

Cost can certainly be an issue if you go for one of the upmarket luxury options and I doubt you can go anywhere for less than we manage in the Kruger. You might save a little by using a tent but not...

Re: DIY Kruger safari - admin

You sound more interested in the LR than the safari! Having at various times visited Tsavo (E&W), Amboseli, Nairobi, Mara, Hell's Gate, Naivasha, Nakuru, Baringo and the other Rift Valley lakes I...

Re: DIY Kruger safari - admin

No apology needed! Of my five safaris in Kenya four were self drive in an LR - you need one for the roads there! The important thing is to go; you won't regret it.

Re: DIY Kruger safari pix 5

They seem pretty well habituated to vehicles. Most will get out of the way when they see you coming, but animals always have right of way whatever their size. Animals, notably the Big Five, which...

Re: DIY Kruger safari pix 5

Received wisdom is that if you drive at more than 8kph you risk 'washboarding' the surface. it seems to vary according to what the surface is.

DAY 8

There are endless varieties of weaver and I think this is the Lesser Masked Weaver. It was nesting in reeds close to the bridge over the Sabie river just outside Lower Sabie camp. The...

Re: DIY Kruger safari - admin

In the original post I quoted some of the costs we incurred. I now have the final tally. In addition to the costs initially listed we spent £926.18. This included the 207 litres of petrol already...

Just when you thought there were no more photos here comes another lot!

DAY 6

Some days there’s a lot to see and others not very much. Day 6 was one of the latter so here’s a bit of park...

Re: Slide Scanner.

I have a Nikon Cooolscan IV which is gathering dust. It's yours for the postage - quite heavy. I bought it on eBay and used it to scan a load of slides. I've been meaning to put it back on eBay...

Re: Best practice external hard drives

I have all my photos backed up to BBC Cloud. I also use OneDrive but mainly for documents. I have 1Tb on each which is more than enough at the moment.

Re: Hummingbirds

The steel band gives way to something else as the evening progresses - both are deafening!

The century plants are the very tall yellow ones that actually flower every twenty years or so. There...

Re: Hummingbirds

English Harbour is a far cry from what it looked like when I first visited in 1962. I gave a set of scanned slides from the period to the museum a couple of years ago. Are the Century plants in...

I've had some success in the past at Shirley Heights. I'm not sure from your description whether that is where you are or at Fort Berkley. There are some places up the west coast where you can get...

Re: Oly 12-200 f3.5-6.3

I was disappointed by the IQ of the 14-150 and I don't see how a 12-200 could be any better. The 12-100 on the other hand is a good performer.

This yielded some interesting encounters, but no photos, with jackal and lion on our pre breakfast drive and also the rear view of a rhino legging it away from the vehicle. Apparently the...

Re: DIY Kruger Safari - the kit

I agree. The northern part of the Kruger lies in the tropics (Capricorn is just north of Mopani rest camp) so one doesn't get the long mornings and evenings to which we are accustomed in our own...
