I would suggest trying your 100-400mm at 300mm where it will be f5.7 and allow your ISO to go higher, even up to 3200 if necessary. Also for Barn Owls you can dial in at least -1 exposure...

Just look at photos here on the forum with the Oly 300mm + TC1.4.....

That's your best option alas. I have the Panasonic 100-400, and do find the F stop a bit high......................

As soon as you say you don't want weight, there really is only the 300mm f/4

However there are some that have used the very long Sigma lens, but that too is heavy.

I separate focus from the shutter for pretty much all the time (so-called back-button focus). It's almost essential for tripod use IMHO (short of using MF). If you want to try it, just Google...

I usual just forget to switch the IS off, no significant problem seem (em1ii)..

Try both on and off to satisfy yourself which is best.........*chr

Both my E-M5 mk1 and PEN-F manuals recommend IS is switched off when using a tripod. It's under "Cautions" on the IS page in the full manual. I often forget though and I haven't noticed any problems.

Which model camera will be used on the tripod? Initially, it was always advised to turn off Image Stabilisation, but the later models seem to be fine if left on.
