Re: Communal Dragonfly, Butterfly and Insect photo thread

I saw my first Swallowtails of the year at Strumpshaw Fen today. Four immaculate, freshly emerged specimens were feeding on nettles in the sunshine. Always a lovely sight.

Re: Take a seat.

Nice and simple Dave. The lime green plant in the window makes it for me.

Re: street / candid photography etiquette - from the other side

I never photograph strangers (I don't have the confidence to do so and I respect their privacy too much) so I would be annoyed if somebody took a photograph of me without my permission. I am not sure...

Re: Communal Bird Photography Thread

Terrific shots of some great birds David. I have never heard the name Tystie for the Black Guillemot before. Is it a Scottish thing?

Re: This week's BIF

Andy, I notice these were taken with the Panasonic 100-400mm. Was there any particular why you chose to use this rather than your Oly 300mm, or is it just for the versatility of the zoom?

Re: Cambridge University Botanical Gardens

That looks like a very productive day in the sunshine. A nice selection of shots and a very fat toad.

Re: This week's BIF

Terrific shots of some great birds. The first and second for me. Successful BIF shots are still a mystery to me but you have obviously worked out how to do it.

Re: A question about multiple AF points

It seems that it is not a common problem. I must be doing something wrong. Back to the drawing board. :(

A question about multiple AF points

How does the camera choose which AF point to use when 5 or 9 points are selected? For a long time I have noticed that the choice seems to be rather random and experiments today have confirmed this.

Re: Romsey details

Very interesting shots Pete. I am glad they didn't add woolly covers to the font columns. :)

Re: 4 + 1 = 5

So that's what attacks my rose buds. Haven't they heard of family planning? A terrific shot Andrew.

Re: The Wheatears are back

A monopod would certainly help to support the camera but I like to walk about with the camera in a shoulder holster, leaving my hands free to use binoculars. A monopod or tripod would be something...

Re: The Wheatears are back

Many thanks for the kind comments. The small AF point certainly makes a huge difference with focusing, although I was having problems holding the lens steady to get the focus point on the bird's eye...

The Wheatears are back

I finally came across my first Wheatears of the year. Three of them were feeding by the old net drying posts at Lowestoft a few days ago. It's good to see them back again.

E-M1, 300mm f4 and...

Re: My first visit to Bempton Cliffs

You did well Phill and have come back with some very nice shots. I have never been there but it looks like a great spot for sea birds. I think your Common Gulls might be Kittiwakes but I am not sure....

Re: Shutter Count not working

I found with my Mk 1 that, if I lingered too long on each button press to check what came next, it didn't always work. I found it was better if I rehearsed the actions and then pressed the buttons...

Re: Shutter Count not working

It worked for me using firmware version 2.1. It failed the first time but I repeated it, pressing the arrow buttons more quickly at step 7 and it worked. My mechanical shutter count is 3715 (barely...

Lovely shots of Wheatears in a natural setting David. I haven't seen any yet this year, although a few have been arriving locally in the past few days.

Re: Male Marsh Harrier Hunting

I think they are cropped by about 20-30%. I did use C-AF + TR but I think that was a mistake. The green rectangle follows the subject about well but it relies on the initial focus lock being correct....

Male Marsh Harrier Hunting

A beautiful male Marsh Harrier hunting over the reedbeds at Strumpshaw Fen on Monday. At the moment BIFs are still very much hit or miss for me - mainly miss!
