Re: Puffin Close-up

The sole reason for the puffin's existence is the delight it gives to photographers!

Re: Communal Bird Photography Thread

If ever there was a bird designed by a committee it must be the Secretary Bird. Some years ago I got a shot of one in Umfolozi where it was eating a small snake.

They're excellent eating - pity they're now out of season!

Re: 90-250/2.8 is it worth getting?

It's a stunning lens both in performance and weight. You need a Sherpa or a wheel barrow which is why I sold mine!

Re: Decided to go long - but what to choose?

I have the 300 and the 100-400 but it is the latter which gets the most use. TBH if it had been available earlier than the 300 I wouldn't have bought the 300.

My Forester has been wearing winter tyres since mid December and loves the stuff we're having now.

Re: Macro lens recommendations

The FT Sigma 150/2.8 macro is also an excellent lens if you want a long working distance. It's now the only FT lens I have since switching to MFT.

Re: which camrea?

The E3 is certainly weather proofed but I don't think the E30 is. That may affect your decision.

Re: 150mm f/2 at LCE

In my E5 days I had one of those and the 35-100. They are stunning lenses but heavy compared to MFT. Apart from composition I seldom got a duff shot even in difficult lighting conditions.

I now...

Re: Olympus Survey

I was attracted by the notion of 10% off so went ahead and did the survey. As others have pointed out it's not too user friendly but worth the effort as you can add the Oly 10% to a retailer's 10%...

Re: Gimbal Head for Wildlife Photography

I'm another supporter of hand held with the 300/4 and the 100-400. Ideally I use the car door or the shelf in a hide for added steadiness. You lose a lot of the advantage of Oly kit if you have to...

Re: Long Dilemma - please help

Versatility mainly. I can't detect any difference in IQ. If it's purely birds then the 300/4+1.4 gives the best reach and you need it to fill the frame. For animals, on safari for example, the...

Re: Long Dilemma - please help

I have the Panny 100-400 and for most purposes find it is better than the Oly 300+1.4. Mine are used mainly for wildlife, which they do very well.

Re: Communal Bird Photography Thread

These were taken late last month at Marquenterre on the Channel coast of France. We visit from time to time and are usually rewarded with leaden skies but this time the sun was out. They are plenty...

Re: Acid Attacks

As I said it's not foolproof but one needs to try something. Doing nothing does not seem a viable option.

Re: Acid Attacks

One option would be to make the carriage/possession of noxious substances a crime unless the possessor could show a good reason. This does reverse the normal 'innocent until proven guilty' rule but...

Re: HDEW Cameras

I bought a 300/4 from them. When it developed a problem it was quickly fixed under their guarantee. I would use them again.

Re: Battery charging in the field

We gave up on inverters in the motor caravan many years ago. You can get a 12v supply for laptops, printers, dongles, phones and BLN1 batteries. We don't carry a mains cable although we used to...
