I used to get that blue hue on brown subjects on bright sunny cloudless days with my first DSLR (a Nikon D-50).

The 28-300mm is 35mm equivalent but there is a (looong) teleconverter attachment which boosts the top end to 510mm equivalent.

Don't know how it compares dimensionally to the XZ-1 other than that...

I've used the standard 70-300 with an adaptor on the Panasonic GH-1. My experience was that it produced good results (same as with my E-510) but the AF operated at half speed compared to the E-510....
