Re: NVIDIA - AI to remove Noise, Grain and Watermarks

I assume that the 'AI' has been trained so that it 'knows' what to expect from a wide range of subject matter. The laws of physics mean that it cannot recover what is totally obscured by noise but...

Flash Diffuser

When I used Nikon, with their SB600 flashgun, I found that a Sto-fen flash diffuser was a very useful accessory.
I've just found an ultra-light, ultra-cheap solution, when using the flashgun bundled...

Re: My new Oly 12-100mm vs 12-40mm RAW sharpness

One of the big 'killers' of perceived sharpness is poor contrast in the image - often caused by internal reflections within a complex lens. It's why old lenses, such as the Zeiss Tessar were so well...

Re: My new Oly 12-100mm vs 12-40mm RAW sharpness

The problem with 'character' is that it only applies to specific types of subject. I think it's better to start with the best (i.e. most faithful) lens and then add any 'aberrations' during image...

Re: Astro Photos

I completely missed the existence of this excellent thread when I started the Communal Night-Sky Photography Thread (https://e-group.uk.net/forum/showthread.php?t=46739) back in December 2017. Since...

Re: Panasonic 100-400 Photo Show saga. Buyers warning.

I bought my Pan100-400 soon after release and the 'fit' seems much the same as my other Oly lenses. Out of curiosity I photographed the mounts of both my Pan lens and my much-used Oly 12-50.

Re: F1.2 pro glass

Since drmarkf mentioned an iOS App, I might also point out that the Focos App (https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/focos/id1274938524?mt=8), which works far twin-lens iPhones, can produce the effect of a...

Re: F1.2 pro glass

I was surprised to read of such a large difference, so I checked with the Cambridge in Colour (https://www.cambridgeincolour.com/tutorials/dof-calculator.htm) DoF calculator. Of course, DoF is not a...

Re: Now Let Loose the Togs of War!

To save you from such a radical step as reading the manual, here's a diagram I once made for some other purpose:

Re: Now Let Loose the Togs of War!

When you reverse the strap, do look at the diagram in the manual. It's important to loop the free end from the camera backwards through the buckle, to get a really secure fixing.

Re: Bit Rot

I take photos because it's a hobby that I enjoy. I doubt whether anyone will want to pore over all my experiments in years to come :)

Re: Best practice external hard drives

I don't know if it's 'best practice' but my method is:
I have two HDDs in an NAS enclosure. Disk 1 is arranged to do an automatic incremental back-up to disk 2, once a day. I do not use RAID or...

Re: I blame Snaarman....

When I bought my E-M5, a few years ago, it came as a 'travel kit' with 12-50, 40-150, and 45 f/1.8 lenses. They proved a brilliant combination, with the 45mm being another of those 'too good to be...

Re: New camera - what do you do first?

I have remembered that I do look at the manual for the little diagram of how to thread the strap correctly. I can never remember exactly how to do it. It is important to do it the way they show, if...

Re: Oly 17mm f1.8...'little gem'

I agree also, even though I do have a 17mm f/1.8. It is not a great lens and relies heavily on software corrections, to remove severe barrel distortion. I bought mine for taking indoor shots of my...

Re: New camera - what do you do first?

Re: Communal Night-Sky Photography Thread

A super image :)

I notice a slight overall 'cross-hatch' effect on the image, when viewed on my monitor, as though taken through a net curtain.

I recall getting similar effects when I had a...
